Conservatives Push False Talking Point Defending Hastert’s Handling Of Foley Scandal

Top conservatives have fanned out on television to defend House Speaker Dennis Hastert’s role in the Foley scandal. A key talking point: when ABC made Foley’s sexually explicit communications public, Hastert “dealt with it immediately” by going to Foley and telling him, “Resign or be expelled.” Both Ken Mehlman and Ed Gillespie said Hastert’s bold ultimatum to Foley was something not seen “in thirty years in this town.” In fact, their entire story is a fabrication. Hastert could not have issued an ultimatum to Foley after the sexually explicit instant messages were made public, because by that time, Foley had already resigned. ABC did not make Foley’s sexually explicit communications public until Friday, September 29, at 6pm ET. Foley had already resigned three hours earlier, at around 3pm ET.

How desperate are Republicans? Well, judging by how quickly they’re throwing themselves in front of television cameras and parrotting the GOP’s latest talking points, these troglodytes are almost apoplectic. What they’re seeing is the reality that the Mark Foley scandal may scuttle whatever chance they may have previously had of maintaining control of Congress…and it’s not sitting well with them. (Oh, God…I’m going to have to go back to working in the produce department at WalMart….)

Of course, these being Republicans we’re talking about, you can bet that they’re not about to go down (no pun intended) without a fight. Even if it means making things up wholesale. Even if it means bastardizing and spinning the truth into something wholly unrecognizable. If it takes lies, propaganda, and turning Dennis Hastert into the sort of heroic, mythic figure he most definitely is not, then that’s what these professional liars and apologists will do. We all know that what truly matters to the GOP is political power, and we also know that they’re not about to let it go easily- especially since some of them have good reason to fear the reality of a Democratic-controlled Congress. Some of these thugs might actually be called to account for their actions…and wouldn’t THAT be entertaining??

Even more laughable is the Republican talking point that releasing the Foley IMs now was a carefully-timed election ploy. Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-NC) has been hitting the talk-show circuit all week, claiming that Democrats were behind the engineering and timing of the Foley scandal:

[O]n CNN’s Late Edition, he said “all the fact points lead to one question”: whether House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Rep. Rahm Emanuel (D-IL) timed the release of the Foley emails.

Of course, when asked on five seprarate occasions by Wolf Blitzer what, if any, evidence he had, McHenry refused to answer the question. Why? Because THERE IS NO EVIDENCE…unless you’re a Republican who’s swallowed so much KoolAid you think that the mere mention of “facts” and “evidence” make it so.

Lie, damn lies…and Republicans….
