Because nothing is more important to Americans than the nexus of politics and “Dancing With the Stars,” we are pleased to report that Sara Evans — apparently a Nashville pop singer and champion dancer — has left the hit show because her husband is one of those sex creeps on CraigsList. Failed Republican congressional candidate and GOP fund-raiser Craig Schelske is also accused of abusing his wife and making his young children watch pornography. According to Evans’ complaint, there are more than a hundred pictures stored on the family computer of Schelske screwing myriad women as well as parading around his house naked and “aroused.” According to his CraigsList ads, Schelske is particularly interested in having anal sex with strangers and threesomes.
I’m not going to use Sara Evans’ pain for my own entertainment or to garner a few cheap laughs. Having been through a divorce myself, I can understand at least a little bit of the anguish she must be feeling. You build your life around a person and a relationship that ultiimately turns out to be something other than what you believed it to be, and then before you know it you’re trying to pick up the pieces.
Of course, no one outside of a relationship can know what happens inside a marriage. Who knows what issues were dogging Evans and Schelske? What’s coming out in the media may be true and accurate, or it may simply be pandering and speculation. Whatever the reality, it does point up the reality that Conservative Evangelical Republicans are no more or less immune to the forces that tear at relationships than us Liberal heathens.
Too often, Republicans hold themselves up as some sort of stellar example of superior morality and godliness. The reality is that adultery and destructive behavior doesn’t respect, or even recognize, ideological boundaries. In fact, perhaps the reason that Conservatives seem to be caught up in this sort of behavior so much is that they tend to portray themselves as above any sort of “immorality”. Putting yourself on a pedestal only means you’re going to have further to fall.
Sara Evans filed for divorce Thursday from her husband of 13 years, Craig Schelske, in Williamson County, alleging that he had committed adultery, verbally abused her and frequently watched pornography at home. On Thursday, Evans announced that she has dropped out of the ABC show “Dancing with the Stars” to give her family her full attention.
According to the document filed in chancery court, Schelske allegedly has on his computer at least 100 photographs of himself posing in an aroused state. There are several photographs of him having sex with other women, the filings stated.
In spite of this, Schelske, accoring to Evans’ divorce filing, was incensed that a costume designer from Dancing With the Stars was to come to their home in Los Angeles. Schelske was upset that a “sodomite” would be coming into their home when their three children would be around. Of course, carrying on numerous affairs would seem to be something he apparently had no conflict with.
Marriage is a two-way street, and I would imagine that Evans also played a role in the demise of her marriage. There’s undoubtedly more to the story than we will ever know…and that’s probably as it should be. The only reason I have any interest in this scenario is because holier-than-thou Republicans like Tom DeLay has previously held Sara Evans up as a shining example of “Good American Values”…whatever the Hell THAT means.
When you feel yourself superior, and you hold yourself and others up as examples of moral superiority, you shouldn’t be surprised when people like me laugh at you when you fall off your pedestal. I could care less about the behavior; we all have skeletons in our closet, and we all have a Dark Side. That doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with us; it just means we’re human…and being human ain’t always pretty.
What would Jesus do? You mean after he finished laughing at your smug self-righteousness and self-superiority?? He’s probably give you a swift kick in the ass.
