Well, for those of you who may have been naively hoping that Mark Foley was going to accept something resembling personal responsibility for his inappropriate and immoral behavior…prepare to be disappointed. Because what’s the first thing a public figure does when they’re caught (literally or figuratively) with their pants down? Well, DUH…they check themselves into rehab.

I don’t know what came over me. I was such a slave to the [insert your choice of chemical (singular or plural) here] that I wasn’t in full possession of my faculties. I can only hope that with the Grace of God and the love of my darling wife and beautiful children, I will be able to get myself right with God and those I love.

Apologies? Nah. Acceptance of responsibility for his transgressions? Say what? Recognition of his moral and possibly legal lapses? Get real…. Just “go into rehab” at an unidentified location and wait until the whole thing blows over. After all, if you can convincingly portray yourself as the innocent victim or your particular addiction/predilection, you have a must greater chance of being viewed in a sympathetic light.

I’m a victim; I have a problem, and I need help….

Just once, it would be nice to hear a public figure accept responsibility for their transgressions and express a heartfelt willingness to accept the consequences of their actions. Checking into rehab is too often just another means of avoiding responsibility. (It wasn’t me: it was the drugs/alcohol/sex/etc….ad nauseum, ad infinitum)

Whatever….
