Who’s to blame for Pastor Haggard’s fall from grace? His fat, lazy wife
Evangelical Leader Quits Amid Allegations of Gay Sex and Drug Use
Most pastors I know do not have satisfying, free, sexual conversations and liberties with their wives. At the risk of being even more widely despised than I currently am, I will lean over the plate and take one for the team on this. It is not uncommon to meet pastors’ wives who really let themselves go; they sometimes feel that because their husband is a pastor, he is therefore trapped into fidelity, which gives them cause for laziness. A wife who lets herself go and is not sexually available to her husband in the ways that the Song of Songs is so frank about is not responsible for her husband’s sin, but she may not be helping him either.
Leave it to a FUNdamentalist minister to blame Ted Haggard’s hypocrisy and moral failings on his wife, Gayle. This is just about the most reprehensible thing I’ve heard spew from the mouth of a self-professed “Christian” in quite some time. Yeah, if Gayle Haggard hadn’t let herself go, Ted would still be chasing her around the bedroom instead of paying a male prostitute to grease his pole….
WTF???
Granted, Driscoll’s point is only one of several contained in an article designed to provide tips on how to avoid temptation. Most of his points are actually quite well-stated and common-sensical. I have no doubt that being a minister and maintaing a high degree of moral rectitude can be a difficult thing at times.
Nonetheless, Ted Haggard’s homosexuality and drug use are NOT his wife’s fault. Ted Haggard made the decisions to maintain a relationship with a male prostitute for three years, and to use methamphetamine as part of his extramarital adventures. It had nothing to do with whether or not Gayle Haggard got fat…if, in fact, that ‘s even the case.
Ted Haggard’s moral failings are his and his alone. That Driscoll thinks it appropriate to even intimate that Gayle Haggard is somehow even partially responsible for her husband’s sexual wanderings because she “let herself go” is insulting at best and reprehensible at worst. It’s just the sort of self-serving reasoning a Christian DUMB@$$ would come up with, isn’t it?
