Another DUMB@$$ AWARD wiener

GOP Senate Leader Mitch McConnell: Give us our right wing theocratic judges or we’ll filibuster

Democrats Warned Not to Block Judges

DUMB@$$ AWARD wiener #479: Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY)

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate’s next Republican leader issued a veiled threat to block action on legislation if Democrats refuse to allow confirmation votes on President Bush’s troubled judicial nominations. Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, who will become minority leader Jan. 4, told the conservative Federalist Society Friday not to feel bad about the Senate election results because Republicans will hold 49 seats in a body that requires 60 votes to end a filibuster and bring legislation or presidential nominees to a final vote. If the “Democrats want our cooperation, they’ll give the president’s judicial nominees an up-or-down vote,” McConnell said. Vice President Dick Cheney told the same group Friday that Republicans’ loss of Congress in last week’s election won’t dissuade Bush from continuing to nominate strict-constructionist judges to the federal bench.

Uh…d’ya think someone ought to tell these fools that THEY LOST THE ELECTION? What gives them the right to think that they are in ANY position to dictate to Democrats? Congressional Republicans are counting on Our Glorious and Benevolent Leader to act as their last line of defense anyway, so threatening Democrats with filibusters (or worse) is really rather pointless and mean-spirited. Republicans, and Our Glorious and Benevolent Leader, realize that they will have a veto-proof minority in the next Congress come January. Even if Democrats want to change the political world, Our Glorious and Benevolent Leader can stop the proceedings with his veto pen.

For McConnell to demand the Democrats step aside and accede to Our Glorious and Benevolent Leader’s continued nominations of theocratic Social Conservative judges only serves to display in living color the overarching arrogance that ultimately was the GOP’s downfall in the midterm elections.

Republicans have spent the last 12 years cramming their agenda down their throats of Democrats, and now Mitch McConnell is demanding that Democrats must stay out of the way until January? How ignorant, and arrogant, can one Republican be? Does McConnell really think that Democrats will stand idly by while they attempt to stuff yet more theocratic, strict constructinist judges into the federal judiciary?

And these fools wonder why they got thumped two weeks ago? This is what happens when you begin to believe that your Congressional majority is a birthright conferred upon you by God Almighty in His infinite wisdom.

Senator McConnell wants bipartisan cooperation but that’s a two-way street,” his spokesman, Don Stewart, said Friday. “You can’t expect easy cooperation on issues of importance to them unless they respect issues of importance to us, including the principle that judges deserve an up-or-down vote.”

Ah, hypocrisy wrapped in the garb of bipartisanship? Man, one thing you really have to admire about Republicans in general and McConnell is that they don’t even bother to hide their arrogance and sense of entitlement. These people will smack you in the mouth, all the while convinced beyond the shadow of a doubt that you are deserving of your punishment.

Democrats chalked up McConnell’s comments to posturing and plain math.

“The president should stop picking fights and start working with Democrats to pick nominees who can be confirmed,” said Jim Manley, spokesman for Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid of Nevada.

Well, sure, that would be the sensible thing to do, but these are Conservative ideologues we’re talking about here, for whom EVERY political conflict is a kill-or-be-killed proposition. Compromise is for losers when God’s on your side, no?

“When we work together on consensus judicial nominees we can make progress,” said Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont, the incoming Democratic chairman of the Judiciary Committee.

Bush did the opposite this week, renominating six judges, four of them vehemently opposed by Democrats. Leahy said the renominations amounted to the White House “taking the bait of right-wing partisan groups.”

“Advice and consent does not mean giving the president a free pass to pack the courts with ideologues from the right or left,” Leahy said. “The American people want the Senate to be more than a rubber stamp.”

If memory serves, Americans just voted to return control of both houses of Congress to Democratic control. That, even to my twisted and highly partisan way of thinking, would seem to indicate that they no longer want Republicans trying to pack the federal judiciary with Social Conservative, slash-and-burn Evangelical Christian ideologues.

Frankly, Mitch McConnell should be kissing Patrick Leahy’s ass. He’s in no position to be demanding that Democrats do ANYTHING. You lost, your majority is about to go the way of the buffalo. Get over it. And shut the Hell up, willya? I’m growing tired of your impotent, self-important bleatings.
