Commentary: Town makes it illegal to fly a foreign flag
SAN DIEGO, California (CNN) — This is where we’ve arrived in this country: You have the constitutional right to burn an American flag, but you can get into trouble for simply flying a foreign one. At least you can in the 30,000-person town of Pahrump, Nevada, which is close to Las Vegas and even closer to stepping over the line with an idiotic, intolerant and insulting ban on foreign (read: Mexican) flags. The town council voted last week, 3-2, to approve an ordinance that makes it illegal to display a foreign flag — unless an American flag is flown above it. Scofflaws face a $50 fine and 30 hours of community service. Pahrump resident Michael Miraglia proposed the ban because, he said, he got upset when he saw immigrant activists marching through U.S. cities last spring, waving Mexican flags. Mr. Miraglia told USA Today that he was especially miffed that “we had Mexican restaurants closed that day.”
Greetings from Amerika; you know, that land of plenty for, of, and by good, God-fearing, Christian White folk? Hey, if you’re gonna live here, you’d best assimilate: eat the food, speak the language, vote Republican. If you’re not willing to do that, you might as well just go back to Mexico, or Guatemala, or Des Moines- or whatever hellhole it is you come from. And if you can’t fly an American flag, then what in the Hell are you doing in Amerika in the first place?
It never ceases to amaze me how many Americans seem to have completely forgotten that virtually all Americans either came from, or are descended from, people who came from, somewhere else. In the case of Miraglia, he decided to take action because he saw people marching and waving Mexican flags…and his favorite Mexican restaurant was closed.
So that’s really what this is all about, then? People like Miraglia want their burrito fix, but they don’t want anything to do with the people who actually brought the food to this country. Pick up our garbage, mow our lawns, build our roads and houses…and then go away. Yes, and Miraglia is hardly alone in being such a bigoted, self-absorbed DUMB@$$. He’d fit in well here in southeast Texas.
Besides, the spectacle with the Mexican flags was no different than what happened a few weeks later when American Jews marched in Los Angeles and New York, waiving the Israeli flag to show support for Israel in its war against Hezbollah. About that, there were few complaints.
Yeah, imagination that; people who look just like Miraglia, protesting and waving foreign flags. Where was the anger? Where was the outrage?
Oh, right; they looked like us. End of problem, eh?
What gives someone the right to wave a foreign flag anyway? Answer: The First Amendment.
Bans like the one in Pahrump are almost certainly unlawful and unconstitutional, leaving one to wonder, about Mr. Miraglia and the Pahrump Town Council, what part of illegal don’t they understand?
Well, ‘cuz these are Brown People were talking about. It would be one thing if they looked like us and talked like us. The problem is, they don’t. They don’t look American, they don’t talk American, and they all have like 18 kids in their families. If they’re going to take our money, shouldn’t they at least have the decency to look, talk, and act like us? And if they want to celebrate Mexico, shouldn’t they go back to Guadalajara to do it?
What I don’t understand is how immigration restrictionists can still insist, with a straight face, that the immigration debate and its offshoots haven’t become anti-Mexican. When people brush aside distinctions of legal versus illegal immigrants and start banning the Mexican flag, what else do you call it?
As my friends in Texas say, I may have been born at night — but I wasn’t born last night.
It’s too bad that Miraglia and his ilk can’t recognize how laughable his not-even-barely-concealed racism is. When the root of a problem is not being able to get your burrito fix, shouldn’t that be taken as a sign that you’re a DUMB@$$? Of course, self-awareness is not normally a hallmark of most DUMB@$$E$, which is what helps make them so laughably entertaining.
With a last name like Miraglia, what are the chances that our intrepid DUMB@$$E$ is at least minimally conscious of his Italian heritage…even if he doesn’ celebrate it outright? So why would that be acceptable while Mexicans doing the same thing is verboten? Oh, right; Italians LOOK like us….
