Ground Zero (#14)

Over the past 3 1/2 weeks, I’ve subjected y’all to the blogging equivalent of home movies in the form of pictures from our recent trip to New York. It was a trip that had a huge impact on me, and I hope the pictures convey that. Adam is beginning to think that TPRS is turning into a mouthpiece for the New York City Convention & Visitor’s Bureau…and there might be something to that. Since returning to Houston, I’ve thought about little but how we could move to New York. Yeah, I LOVE New York.

I’ve travelled the world, and yet I’ve never been any place that I’ve felt so attuned with. Granted, I realize that the reality of living in New York would be far different than a whirlwind 5-day vacation at a hotel in Midtown. For one thing, the cost of housing in Manhattan is phenomenally expensive. So, I’ll buy a lottery ticket every now and hope that perhaps it will be our ticket to Manhattan.

Frankly, I was surprised at how much I enjoyed New York. Life there involves a lot of two things I detest: crowds and lines. Crowds just come with the territory when you have several million people stuffed onto an island. Try taking a walk through Times Square anytime, day or night, and you’ll find crowds unlike anything you’ll encounter just about anywhere else. It can be a bit maddening, but it’s also what makes New York what it is. At 10:00pm on a weekday, you’ll still find a city with an energy I’ve never seen anywhere else…except perhaps for London’s Bond Street during Christmas.

There’s an energy and an excitement that resonates in New York unlike anything I’ve ever felt before. I’ve been to a lot of places that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed and could see myself living in under the right circumstances, but I’ve never come back from a place so thoroughly bewitched and smitten as I was, and still am, with New York. Yes, I love New York…and I would love to be able to live there. I just wish I could figure out how we’re going to afford it.
