Another DUMB@$$ AWARD wiener

Steelers’ Porter apologizes for comments

DUMB@$$ AWARD wieners #493: Joey Porter

Steelers linebacker Joey Porter is sorry if he offended anybody with his comments last Thursday — except Kellen Winslow, of course….”I didn’t mean to offend anybody but Kellen Winslow,” Porter told reporters after Steelers practice Tuesday….”I would just like to say it was a poor choice of words in the comment I made toward Winslow. If I offended anybody, I apologize for that,” Porter said. Porter ridiculed the Browns following Pittsburgh’s win Thursday night, calling tight end Winslow a derogatory name and saying the team is too soft to be a true rival to the Super Bowl champions.

I love football, but I’ve quite frankly grown tired of the cheap, threadbare machismo that seems part and parcel of life in the NFL these days. Instead of watching players act like mature, professional adults, we’re treated to moral reprobates acting as if they’re still in junior high- the verbal equivalent of jock-snapping. Questioning an opponent’s manhood? That’s tame. Questioning their intelligence? Please. Questioning their sexuality? Now there’s an insult we should all be able to get behind, eh?

Here’s a suggestion for immature DUMB@$$E$ like Joey Porter: how about you just shut up and play the game? Do your job, play hard, and have fun. Is it so difficult to treat your opponents as human beings worthy of respect…even if you happen to not like them? Most NFL players have children; is this really the example they want their children seeing? As a parent, would you want you child to witness you acting like an immature jackass who needs to insult, ridicule, and refer to their opponents in the most degrading of manners in order to gain an advantage?

Joey Porter represents everything that’s wrong with the NFL, and in fact American society today. It doesn’t bother me if Porter detests Kellen Winslow; that’s his prerogative. This is still a free country, and nowhere is it written where you have to like one another. You don’t even have to play well together. Is it too much to expect adult males to act their age and not their helmet size?

Grow up already…and if you’re going to act like an childish, immature DUMB@$$, could you at least wait until the game is over and the cameras are turned off? Yes, that means you, Mr. Porter.
