Holding others to standards we'd never dream of holding ourselves to

The photos that stripped Ms. Nevada of her title (Most definitely NOT safe for work)

Trump: Tara NOT Fired, Will Enter Rehab

Man, we are one seriously conflicted country when it comes to the subject of sex, aren’t we? Throw the Conservative, idealized vision of womanhood perpetuated by beauty pageants into the mix, and what we have is a recipe for some serious hypocrisy and world-class double standards.

By now, y’all are no doubt sick to death of Tara Conner. Lord knows I am. From the sound of things, it sounds like the current Miss USA is guilty of doing the same things that a good many young women do during their time in college. It’s like a rite of passage- drink, party, engage in loose behavior…and who among us isn’t guilty of at least a little bit of that (unless you went to Baylor)? Yet a good many Americans are aghast that Ms. Conner drank, partied, and (You go, girl!!) engaged in some public face-sucking with Miss Teen USA Katie Blair (Where are the pictures???).

What I find so comical and hypocritical about this is that the people running the pageants are the ones making the decisions regarding the “appropriateness” of the behavior of the beauty queens in question. Is there anything more entertaining than the idea of Donald Trump (he of the three marriages and at least two affairs) playing the role of moral beacon? Am I the only one who seems to be cognizant of the pronounced and very public hypocrisy inherent in the standards we have no problem demanding that our beauty queens adhere to? We demand that our beauty queens adhere to exacting and demanding standards of moral comportment that would challenge most nuns…all while we drink, carouse, and carry on with pretty much anyone who will have us in their beds.

When these beauty queens do prove themselves to be fallible human beings, we fall all over ourselves in paroxysms or righteous indignation. How DARE they engage in such licentious, loose, and lascivious behavior? Imagine, the very fruit of American womanhood, carrying on like a common trollop. OH, THE HUMANITY…. All, of course, while we eagerly ogle every picture and devour every story…wishing that we were on the receiving end of that behavior.

Tara Conner’s one talent is that she looks fabulous in a bikini…yes, she certainly does. Can you blame her for using what she has and taking advantage of the opportunities presented to her?

Katie Rees’ one talent is that she’s the picture of rich, creamy deliciousness in a bikini. Her particular crime was getting schnackered at a party five years ago while someone was walking around with a camera and no doubt egging her on. Now she’s been deemed morally unfit to represent a pageant that exists to provide a hopelessly outdated and hypocritical picture of the ideal American woman.

Isn’t it about time we lose the hypocrisy (and the beauty pageants with it) and stop holding these young women to standards we would NEVER hold ourselves to? Perhaps when we stop glorifying an outdated and inaccurate portrayal of what women should aspire to be, the reality that young women like to party will stop being such a shock to so many hypocritical Americans?

If nothing else, I suppose, Conner and Rees should have a brilliant future ahead of them as “Girls Gone Wild” cast members….
