Semantics, propaganda, and mental masturbation

Powell says world should recognize Iraq at civil war

DUBAI (Reuters) - Former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell said on Wednesday Iraq had descended into civil war and urged world leaders to accept that “reality”. Powell’s remarks came ahead of a meeting between Bush and Iraqi prime minister Nuri al-Maliki in the Jordanian capital to discuss the security developments in Iraq….”I would call it a civil war,” Powell told a business forum in the United Arab Emirates. “I have been using it (civil war) because I like to face the reality,” added Powell.

“What’s so civil about war, anyway?” It’s a line from an old Guns ‘n Roses song, but it’s been much on my mind lately. This whole debate about whether the senseless violence in Iraq constitutes a civil war seems a bit over the top, doesn’t it? No matter what you call whatever it is that’s happening in Iraq, the end result is exactly the same. Innocent people, and some not-so-innocent people, are dying and will continue to die with alarming dispatch. Whether we acknowledge it as a “civil war” or a “knitting circle” is really beside the point. Who f——-g cares what we call it? Iraq is a disaster regardless or whatever appellation we happen to hang on it.

When will we get past the “civil war/not civil war” debate and begin to focus on the one thing that really DOES matter- figuring out how to extricate our country and our sons and daughters from the clusterf—k that Our Glorious and Benevolent Leader lied his way into?

When will we begin to demand that we get past the silly, pointless argument over what we call the ongoing indiscriminate slaughter in Iraq and try to figure out how we rid ourselves of it? When do we demand that our leaders do the right thing and figure out how to remove our military from what has turned into this generation’s Vietnam? When do we admit that we have not learned the lessons of history and have been all too willing to sacrifice our sons and daughters for lies and propaganda?

Enough of the lies, the propaganda, and the arguments over how we refer to the clusterf—k in Iraq. A clusterf—k is a clusterf—k is a clusterf—k. While we’re debating semantics, our sons and daughters (and Iraqis by the score) continue to die violent, painful, and senseless deaths.

Enough is enough….
