So you see, Virginia...not all Christians are Right-wing, Evangelical nutjobs

Dr. Dobson, Tear Down that Dishonest Article on Your Website

MY NEW HERO #56: David Kuo

My dismay with the White House was with how the Christian voters were used and manipulated, with how President Bush’s own personal faith in Jesus was used to recruit pastors and Christian voters, with how the White House manipulated the news cycle thereby giving it political cover to not follow-through on promises (particularly domestic policy promises), with how the poor were being used for political purposes (despite presidential promises to the contrary), and, yes, with the administration’s failure to put “any monetary muscle behind the lip service it paid to ‘compassionate conservatism.’”

Over the past six years of Our Glorious and Benevolent Leader’s reign of error, I’ve become progressively more disillusioned with Christianity. In BushWorld, Christianity is less a belief system and a way of life that simply another self-righteous tactic for seizing and maintaining political power. Our Glorious and Benevolent Leader’s muscular, apocalyptic theology has led him to pursue policy initiative wholly inconsistent with the teachings of Jesus Christ. Yet, when delivered with sufficient gravitas and liberal (no pun intended) dollops of propaganda, the American Sheeple have swallowed he KoolAid without so much as a dissenting thought.

David Kuo, the former head of the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives, became disillusioned with what he saw as this Administration’s corrupting of Christianity for political ends. Now that he’s on the outside, and now that he’s broken the BushWorld code of omerta by writing a book exposing what he saw (Tempting Faith), the Religious Right is coming after him with guns ablaze and little, if any, regard for the truth.

The latest broadside comes from former DUMB@$$ AWARD wiener Rev. James Dobson’s Focus on the Family website, which seems to be to Christianity what firepower was to David Koresh. I’ll spare you the gory details of Gary Schneeburger’s foaming-at-the-mouth assault on Kuo, because it’s actually more fun if you read it yourself.

I do have a very simple question, though:

WHAT DOES ANY OF THIS HAVE TO DO WITH CHRISTIANITY? What would Jesus do? Well, I’m not a Christian, but something tells me he’d be kicking ass and taking names. Given what some of these Born-Again hypocrites are doing in His name, I’M sickened…and I’m not even a Christian.

From where I sit, Kuo gets it. He understand that Christianity is about knowing, understanding, and following the teachings of Jesus Christ. It’s not about political power, or character assassination, or butchering the truth to serve a narrow, fear-based agenda. Would that more Christians “got it” like Kuo. This would be a much different world.

Mohandas K. Gandhi once said that the problem with modern Christianity wasn’t with Christianity itself, it was with Christians. If the last six years have demonstrated anything, it’s the truth of Gandhi’s statement. It’s too bad that there aren’t more Christians like David Kuo out there; perhaps Christianity would actually then stand for something besides self-interested hypocrisy.

What would Jesus do? I have no idea, but if I were Him, I’d burn the whole thing down and start over.
