This week in Jesusland, 12.24.06

(As ever, many thanks to my friends at The Sinner’s Guide To The Evangelical Right)

It’s Christmas Eve here in Jesusland, a time when all good, God-fearing Christians should be remembering the reason for the season. Yes, the War on Christmas © is finally and mercifully whimpering to it’s inevitable close, and Bill O’Reilly is once again bereft and morally vacant…same as he ever was.

After tomorrow, we’ll once again have an 11-month truce in the War on Christmas © . Bill O’Reilly can go back to railing about clueless, America-hating Libruls while they get their helmets polished by fluffers interns, or whatever it is they do when they’re off-camera. Other Evangelical Conservative zealots can go back to hating whoever it is they normally hate in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit (Amen). For those of us here in Jesusland, though, the fun NEVER ends. As long as there are those trolls out there willing to exploit and twist the teachings of Jesus Christ for their own selfish ends, there are those like me who will never cease taking delight in holding them up for some richly-deserved public ridicule.

Same as it ever was….

Oh…and Merry Christmas to all as we remember the reason for the season! (Uh…propping up the retail sector of the American economy??)

  • Have You Had Gay Man Sex With A New Life Pastor?: If you have, it would appear that you’re not alone. The highly Evangelical and uber-holy New Gay Life Church seems to be a breeding ground for pastors who swing from both sides of the plate. If you have had gay man sex with a New Gay Life pastor…well, than Dan Savage is here for you. Oh, and if you’ve done crystal meth with them…you’re on your own.

  • Robin Hayes says we will win in Iraq by “spreading the message of Jesus Christ” there: Stability in Iraq ultimately depends on spreading the message of Jesus Christ, the message of peace on earth, good will towards men. Everything depends on everyone learning about the birth of the Savior.…. So if we just turned American soldiers into missionaries…hmm, wasn’t this what the Crusades were all about? Who would Jesus bomb??

  • Bishop: Bureaucrats are writing Christ out of Christmas: A leading Church of England bishop has launched an outspoken attack on “thoughtless bureaucracy and political correctness” for helping to “write Christ out of Christmas”. The Rt Rev Dr Michael Nazir-Ali, the Bishop of Rochester, accuses a small but powerful group of officials of marginalising religious celebrations out of an oversensitivity to multiculturalism….”Britain is again faced with the challenge of a totalitarian ideology that…claims to be rooted in a religious tradition,” he writes. “If Britain is to defend its values successfully, it must rediscover the Christian faith in which these values are ultimately rooted.”…. You know, it takes a brave man to use the words “totalitarian ideology” in a discussion of Christmas. Not just any religious zealot would have the stones to make that analogy. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve just received my orders. There’s a nativity scene I have to vandalize. Welcome to the front lines of the War on Christmas © ….

  • Handing Out Medals in the War on Christmas: So who should be the real candidates for “Ebbys”? [Ed Note: Awards “bestowed by the Becket Fund to “the most ridiculous affront on the Christmas and Hanukkah season.”] People who fret and fuss over what the political correctness of amounts to the set decoration of the holidays — or those who dishonor the true spirit of the holidays, people with power and parsimony cohabiting in their hearts? Why not Ebbys for the pension fund raiders instead? The cost-plus war profiteers? The corporate cold-shoulder crowd? The health-care providers who provide neither health nor care? The White House ”bring it on” bunch?…. My vote goes to Bill O’Reilly and John Gibson from Fox News Channel, who, though they’re as much as about the teachings of Jesus Christ as Ted Kaczynski, have no problem with flogging the alleged War on Christmas © for their own self-aggrandizement. Merry #)!@$%& Christmas, eh?

  • Offering Support for a Menorah, Unofficially: The Downtown Development Authority, a quasi-governmental agency that owns the square, allowed a menorah-lighting ceremony but refused Rabbi Gorelik’s request to leave the menorah there for the eight days of Hanukkah. He then asked the city if he could place it with a Christmas tree display in Oak Street Plaza nearby. The City Council refused that request, saying it would have to study the issue….”Someone said there are 79 recognized religions in the world,” said one member, Karen Weitkunat. “Where do you draw the line?” Another member, Diggs Brown, said: “If we were to open it up to a menorah, then everyone wants to get involved. You’re going to get sued if you allow religious displays, and you’re going to be sued if you don’t have them.”…. Yeah; this is a Christian holiday. To the rest of the heathens, we humbly say…get your own damn religious/economic celebration.

  • ‘08 Hopeful Romney Assures Leading Evangelicals “Jesus Christ Is My Lord And Savior”: What did Romney really believe about Jesus Christ? Romney didn’t hesitate. “When I say Jesus Christ is my Lord and savior, I realize that means something different to you than it does to me,” he admitted.…. Indeed. Jesus Christ is from the planet Xenu…and Romney believes that while Heaven is populated by aliens, after the Rapture all believers with be transported to a place that look suspiciously like Salt Lake City.

  • Only Social Conservatives Featured On Meet the Press Special ‚Äö√Ñ√≤Faith In America’: This weekend, NBC will air a special edition of Meet the Press addressing “Faith in America.” The only two guests scheduled are evangelist Rick Warren, author of “Purpose Driven Life,” and Newsweek editor Jon Meacham, author of “American Gospel.” NBC says the two will discuss the questions, “Can religion unite the country for the greater good and what role will God and values play in the 2008 presidential election?”…. ‘Cuz God knows…only Right-wing Social Conservatives zealots are qualified to discuss the role of religion in America.
