Bush Is Urged to Act on Criticism of Muslim
White House silent on Goode, Prager
White House officials said they were aware that some Democrats and Muslims were urging President Bush to admonish Representative Virgil H. Goode Jr., Republican of Virginia, and Dennis Prager, the conservative commentator, for suggesting that the first Muslim elected to the House had no place in Congress. “We’re aware of the situation,” said Dana Perino, a spokeswoman for Mr. Bush, “but no judgments have been made.” Mr. Goode said the election of Keith Ellison, a Minnesota lawyer who converted to Islam as a college student, posed a threat to American values. Mr. Prager, a presidential appointee to the board that oversees the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, said Mr. Ellison should not serve if he could not swear on a Bible, though he has apologized for those remarks. Mr. Ellison plans to use the Koran during a private swearing-in ceremony next month.
Anyone expecting the White House or GOP leadership to reprimand recent DUMB@$$ AWARD wiener Rep. Virgil Goode (R-12th century) can expect to be waiting awhile. As usual, Our Glorious and Benevolent Leader is more than willing to allow some low-level flunky/surrogate to do his dirty work for him. If either the GOP leadership or Our Glorious and Benevolent Leader disagreed with Goode and his racist ignorance, you can bet that they would be beaming their emissaries to the four corners of the Earth flogging their talking points and speaking in soothing tones about their commitment to diversity and Americans of all faiths and creeds and how Good doesn’t speak for the Republican Party. The silence emanating from the White House and the GOP can and should be taken as proof that Goode really DOES speak for the Republican Party. Meanwhile, the real work continues to be done behind the scenes to advance the interests of the Rich, the White, and the Conservatively Republican who donate large sums to GOP causes.
The problem with Goode’s ignorant, racist pronouncements isn’t that he’s revealed himself to be a bigot and ignoramus of the first order. Goode is merely one of many racist, bigoted Republicans in Congress, most of whom do a much better job of camouflaging their unsavory ideology. No, the problem is that Goode’s lunacy has met with stone silence from any Republican in anything resembling positions of authority. Implicit in their silence is their tacit official approval of Goode’s racism, intolerance, and bigotry.
