In an stunning announcement that surprised…well, no one, really, Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) announced that he’s running for President. Man, I didn’t see THAT one coming….
Of course, no one knows what Obama actually stands for, but he sure does look good on stage, doesn’t he? Obama’s articulate, he says all the right things, strikes all the right notes…but so far he’s like a beer commercial: TASTES GREAT! LESS FILLING!! And he’s clean (apologies to Joe Biden)!
There will, of course, be plenty of time for Obama to define himself- or for his opponents to do it for him. Primary season is still a full 12 months away, and a lot can happen in that time. Four years ago at this time, who had ever heard of Howard Dean?
The interesting thing about announcing this early is the problem of maintaining any sort of momentum for a full year before a primary voter even enters a voting booth? Is it possible that, 12 months from now, we’ll all be so sick of Barack Obama that we’ll be looking elsewhere? Is it possible in Presidential politics to start too strong too soon? I suppose we’ll find out, won’t we?
In the meantime, wouldn’t it be nice to find out something about what Obama actually stands for? I want to believe, but I’m not about to throw my support behind a Democratic politician that I still know nothing about. Looking good on stage and hitting your talking points does not sound policy make.
And here’s another thing: doesn’t Obama still have to prove to Glenn Beck that he’s not a terrorist?
