Another DUMB@$$ AWARD wiener

House Anti-Murtha Leader Flip-Flops To Attack Iraq Plan

DUMB@$$ AWARD wiener #539: Rep. Sam Johnson (R-TX)

Top House conservatives have teamed up with right-wing radio host Hugh Hewitt and other bloggers to launch a campaign attacking Rep. John Murtha’s (D-PA) new Iraq plan, which would attach measures to a defense spending bill requiring that all U.S. forces sent to Iraq are well-trained and well-equipped. Rep. Sam Johnson (R-TX) is “leading the effort to force a House vote on a “binding measure to prevent cutting or restricting money for the war. During last week’s Iraq debate, Johnson attacked Iraq war critics relentlessly….

Welcome to another fun-filled, exciting episode of “Liars, Hypocrites, and Republicans”. In this week’s episode, Texas’ own DUMB@$$, Republican Congressman Sam Johnson, spares no rhetorical excess in his efforts to paint opponents of the war in Iraq as America-hating spineless weenies.

Yes, in true DUMB@$$ fashion, Johnson stands up for Our Glorious and Benevolent Leader © and his excellent, if bloody and never-ending, war. So what if a few thousand of our sons and daughters have died for no discernible reason. Johnson understands that what really matters here is maintaing Republican hegemony and protecting the legacy of Our Glorious and Benevolent Leader © . Hey, it’s not as if Johnson has lost anyone in Iraq, or is even at risk of losing anyone. Nonetheless, only by insulting, demeaning, and marginalizing those with the temerity to disagree (We’re at war, damnit! Are you trying to give aid and comfort to the enemy??) can Johnson ensure that Republicans intimidate and bludgeon those who dare to protest and disagree.

Then again, the depths of Johnson’s hypocrisy is truly difficult to grasp. He makes Newt Gingrich and Tom DeLay look like the very personifications of reason, virtue, and civility…AND he’s a hypocrite and a DUMB@$$ to boot!

Debating non-binding resolutions aimed at earning political points only destroys morale, stymies success, and emboldens the enemy.

The grim reality is that this House measure is the first step to cutting funding of the troops‚Äö√Ѭ∂Just ask John Murtha about his “slow-bleed plan that hamstrings our troops in harm’s way.

Wow…no cheesy, overamped rhetoric about “cutting and running”? Of course, it sounds as if Johnson’s just getting warmed up, doesn’t it? I can hardly wait until he gets to the “spineless weenie” part.

It’s interesting to note, if you’re still with me, that Johnson is all about supporting the war effort…unless, of course, the war effort happens to be that of a Democratic President, in this case one Bill Clinton. Think Bosnia, 1995:

I wholeheartedly support withholding funds‚Äö√Ѭ∂ Although it is a drastic step and ties the President’s hands, I do not feel like we have any other choice. The President has tied our hands, gone against the wishes of the American people, and this is the last best way I know how to show my respect for our American servicemen and women. They are helpless, following orders. But we, we are in a position to stop this terrible mistake before it happens.

Turn the clock forward 12 years, and anyone with half a brain and a functional sense of decency would be speaking the same words on the floor of the House…unless you’re Sam Johnson, of course.

Well, while I can’t really speak to the “stopping a terrible mistake” part, I can recognize Johnson’s impressive display of partisan hypocrisy with a well-deserved DUMB@$$ AWARD. Lord knows he richly deserves it.
