This week in Jesusland 2.25.07

(As ever, many thanks to my friends at and DefCon)

Yes, another week has come and gone here in beautiful, bucolic Jesusland. Hell, they don’t call this “God’s Country” for nothing, eh? OK, so their have been a few chinks exposed in our righteous metaphorical armor this week. Yeah, John McCain is sucking up to everyone on the Religious Right; this week it was creationists. It turns out that Ted Haggard was a busier boy that anyone had imagined. And it turns out that Catholic priests aren’t the only religious authority figures with zipper problems.

Man, it’s a b—-h being human, ain’t it??

  • Christian Right Labors to Find ‘08 Candidate: Many conservatives have already declared their hostility to Senator John McCain of Arizona, despite his efforts to make amends for having once denounced Christian conservative leaders as “agents of intolerance,” and to former Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani of New York, because of his liberal views on abortion and gay rights and his three marriages…. Both Mr. McCain and Mr. Romney have worked hard to pitch themselves to Christian conservatives ‚Äö√Ñ√Æ Mr. McCain by delivering speeches at venues like Mr. Falwell’s Liberty University or a recent abstinence-promotion event, Mr. Romney by leading the charge for a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage. But neither has won over many of the movement’s leaders…. Yeah, I’d imagine it’s got to be tough to find a Republican narrow, judgmental, and self-righteous enough to meet with the approval of the Radical Relgious Right. To win these zealots over, you’d almost have to advocate revisiting the Crusades. Hey, if it was good enough for the 12th century….

  • Misrepresenting Science to Halt Abortions: The cover story on the February 26th edition of Time Magazine focuses on the most recent tactic employed by the religious right in their war on a woman’s right to control her own body ‚Äö√Ñ√Æ Crisis Pregnancy Centers. These centers capitalize on fear and the misrepresentation of medical data to push an anti-health agenda on pregnant women…. Gee, what a shock; lies, fears, and deception employed in the service of a narrow ideological agenda. Whodathunkit? And get this: James Dobson’s Focus on the Family is smack in the middle of this travesty. I NEVER would have guessed that….

  • Georgia legislator: evolution is a myth propagated by an ancient Jewish sect: A Jewish organization is demanding an apology from a Georgia legislator for a memo that says the teaching of evolution should be banned because it is a myth propagated by an ancient Jewish sect. State Rep. Ben Bridges denies writing the memo, which attributes the Big Bang theory to Kabbalah, or Jewish mysticism. Bridges has long opposed the teaching of evolution in Georgia classrooms and has introduced legislation requiring only that “scientific fact” be taught…. Actually, Bridges should probably apologize for not having the balls to own up to being a religious zealot and a first-class bigot. ‘Course, that would take all the fun out of it, wouldn’t it??

  • Haggard Had Other “Improper Relationships”: Numerous individuals reported knowledge of New Life Church founder Ted Haggard’s struggle with a “dark side,” leading to his departure from the mega-church, a member of the church’s board of overseers told parishioners Sunday…. “Dark side”? Isn’t that Christian doublespeak for “Ted Haggard had a zipper problem. He’d let anyone with a deep voice and some meth undo his zipper.”

  • Sex abuse victims’ advocates go after Southern Baptists: The victims’ advocates who dogged the Roman Catholic Church over sex abuse by its clergy have now turned their attention to the Southern Baptists, accusing America’s largest Protestant denomination of also failing to root out molesters. The Chicago-based Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests has started a campaign to call attention to alleged sex abuse committed by Southern Baptist ministers and concealed by churches…. Good, God-fearing Christian men? Abusing attractive, vulnerable young women? Using them for their own sexual gratification? I am shocked…SHOCKED…that this sort of thing happens in Baptist churches. And all this time I thought Catholic priests had a monopoly on abusing their positions of authority to get their rocks off.

  • Atheist group takes on Bush initiative: Annie Laurie Gaylor speaks with a soft voice, but her message catches attention: Keep God out of government. Gaylor has helped transform the Freedom From Religion Foundation from obscurity into the nation’s largest group of atheists and agnostics, with a fast-rising membership and increasing legal clout. Next week, the group started by Gaylor and her mother in the 1970s to take on the religious right will fight its most high-profile battle when the U.S. Supreme Court hears arguments on its lawsuit against President Bush’s faith-based initiative…. WHAT separation of Church and State? Any good, God-fearing American knows that Our Glorious and Benevolent Leader © was anointed by God to lead this great nation back to it’s Fundamentalist Christian roots. Right?
