Let me just offer four words of caution: HE'S NOT VINCE YOUNG

With Schaub’s arrival, Texans acknowledge Carr will be gone: Houston gives up draft position, picks for QB Schaub…Falcons swap 10th pick for No. 8; will get second-round picks in 2007 and ‘08

During quarterback Matt Schaub’s introductory news conference at Reliant Stadium today, the Texans admitted for the first time that quarterback David Carr’s tenure with the team will end soon. When asked about Carr’s status with the team, general manager Rick Smith disclosed that the Texans are trying to work a trade for him….”Matt is our starting quarterback,” Smith said. “Everybody here appreciates the contributions that David has made to this franchise and to this city. We are working with his representatives to find another place for him. He’ll be excited about his opportunity and we all wish him the very best. ”

Pardon me while I refrain from rejoicing that the Texans finally have a new quarterback. Frankly, the celebration should have taken place a year ago, when Houston could, and should, have been celebrating the drafting of Vince Young, who could have been their quarterback for the next 10-15 years. Who the (&^% is Matt Schaub anyway, and while should anyone be thinking that he is going to be anything but a placeholder until the Texans can actually draft a decent quarterback?

OK, so perhaps I’m being a bit harsh. After all, 15 years ago another Atlanta backup QB, Brett Favre, was traded to Green Bay. If memory serves, Favre’s done pretty well over the years, so perhaps there’s hope for Schaub. After five years of varying degrees of ineptitude under center, it would be nice to see something- anything- different at Reliant Stadium this fall.

David Carr’s failure, if it can even truly be called that, was not entirely his doing. After being sacked 76 times during his rookie season, Carr spent the next four seasons looking as if he was running for his life. “Shellshocked” is the word that comes to mind. Stuck behind an abysmal offensive line and saddled with poor coaching, Carr never really had a chance to be successful in Houston. He’ll land on his feet, of course (Hey, my Vikings are looking for a quarterback); he’s too good of an athlete not to. Then again, after making something like $35 million during his tenure in Houston, David Carr isn’t exactly where his next Big Mac is coming from.

Make no mistake; David Carr was not the problem, and Matt Schaub is not the solution. Houston’s ineptitude is a many-petalled flower, and while one petal may have been plucked, the rest remain.

I smell another 4-12 season, y’all….
