What would Jesus do? Well, he'd kick your @$$ for not staying on-message.

Evangelical’s Focus on Climate Draws Fire of Christian Right

Leaders of several conservative Christian groups have sent a letter urging the National Association of Evangelicals to force its policy director in Washington to stop speaking out on global warming. The conservative leaders say they are not convinced that global warming is human-induced or that human intervention can prevent it. And they accuse the director, the Rev. Richard Cizik, the association’s vice president for government affairs, of diverting the evangelical movement from what they deem more important issues, like abortion and homosexuality. The letter underlines a struggle between established conservative Christian leaders, whose priority has long been sexual morality, and challengers who are pushing to expand the evangelical movement’s agenda to include issues like climate change and human rights.

I suppose if there’s one thing that dogmatic Evangelicals value, it’s lockstep ideological conformity. Yes, Job One is forcing their narrow, inflexible theology upon Americans by giving it the force of law. Once they do that, then they can probably relax a bit as they look for other ways to force their views upon all of us- never mind that most of us don’t think or believe as these narrow-minded troglodytes do.

It’s this laser-like focus that makes these slash-and-burn Evangelicals so dangerous. These folks will stop at nothing to ensure that they’re able force their narrow worldview upon the rest of us. And as far as global warming goes…well, that’s so off-message it’s not even funny.

Sometimes, I have to wonder if these folks are so busy trying to force their views on the rest of us that they’ve forgotten what makes America the healthy, vibrant nation it is. Our diversity in race, color, and creed are just a few of the things that makes this country what it is. Yet people like Gary Bauer and James Dobson feel justified in their attempts to force all of us to think like joyless White Evangelical Christians.

I hate to run the risk of becoming an example of Godwin’s Law, but there is a historically recent example of a nation that tried, and succeeded in making monochromatic monotheism the ruling principle of the state. I’m not going to accuse Evangelicals of advocating the religious equivalent of National Socialism…but you should feel free to go there if you’re so inclined.

“We have observed,” the letter says, “that Cizik and others are using the global warming controversy to shift the emphasis away from the great moral issues of our time.”

Those issues, the signers say, are a need to campaign against abortion and same-sex marriage and to promote “the teaching of sexual abstinence and morality to our children.”

Indeed. Nothing else matters until can can turn modern-day America into the moral equivalent of 1950s Pleasantville…where women know their place, and abortion and homosexuality are kept where they belong- deep in the closet.

The letter, dated Thursday, is signed by leaders like James C. Dobson, chairman of Focus on the Family; Gary L. Bauer, once a Republican presidential candidate and now president of Coalitions for America; Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council; and Paul Weyrich, a longtime political strategist who is chairman of American Values.

They acknowledge in the letter that none of their groups belong to the National Association of Evangelicals, a broad coalition that represents 30 million Christians in hundreds of denominations, organizations and academic institutions. But, they say, if Mr. Cizik “cannot be trusted to articulate the views of American evangelicals,” then he should be encouraged to resign.

Yes, none of thei groups belong to NAE, but they still feel they have the perfect right to tell them what to do , what to say, and how to go about it. Yes, when you’re a follower of The One True Faith, you can do that sort of thing. After all, when you speak directly to God…well, though most of us would be on medication, you speak with a moral clarity and authority mere mortals tremble before.

If these fools have their way, Miami Beach will be underwater, but gays will be back in the closet where the belong, and abortionists will be out of business. Praise Jeebus!! Man, it must be nice to be able to channel the voice of the Almighty without having to be heavily medicated.
