DUMB@$$ AWARD wiener #568: Paul Cameron

In a recent report on the anti-gay movement, the Center’s Intelligence Project exposed the role of Christian Right groups in fomenting hatred against homosexuals. Three of the dozen singled out are designated hate groups. Fundamentalist leaders’ attacks on gays have grown increasingly vicious since the 2003 Supreme Court Lawrence v. Texas decision that struck down state sodomy statues. The attacks were further propelled by the 2004 election, when 11 states voted on anti-gay marriage amendments as Christian Right groups spent millions on ad campaigns and get-out-the-vote efforts featuring anti-gay crusaders demonizing their opponents. Never has the anti-gay movement had the momentum it has now, and never has it been so close to achieving its larger, ultimate goal, which in the words of Focus on the Family founder James Dobson, is to win a “second civil war” for control of the U.S. government.

I’ve always believed that the best way to deal with ignorant, hateful trolls is to simply ignore them. People who appeals to the baser instincts of the American sheeple can only prosper if their views reach a wider audience. This is why I seldom write about Michelle Malkin or Ann Coulter anymore. It can only encourage them and their ilk to continue spewing their bile.

Every now and then, though, I run across someone whose views are so vile, so hateful, and so throughly rooted in a corrupt and evil version of Christianity that I simply cannot keep my own counsel. So it is with Paul Cameron

One of the truly disturbing (and yet beautiful) things about this country is the right to free speech and expression. I say that because of people like Paul Cameron, people who wrap their hatred and intolerance in the warm embrace of their “Christian” faith. There are those out there who would gladly marginalize and in some cases even eliminate those who live, think, and believe differently than they do, simply because they believe that God is on their side. Their version of God is an angry, spiteful, mean-sprited son of a bitch who brooks no dissent or variance from the accepted path. Those who do dare to differ deserve to be subjugated to the will of the Chosen Ones, and in some cases even eliminated altogether with extreme prejudice.

Yes, this is free speech and expression at it’s worst and most sickening, but as I’ve often said, free speech can be and often is offensive and objectionable speech. Yikes…it doesn’t get more offensive and objectionable than Paul Cameron. Even if you’re not familiar with Cameron, this ought to clue you in: former DUMB@$$ AWARD wiener and self-righteous “Christian” bigot James Dobson is a BIG fan.

Now THERE’S a ringing endorsement, eh?? That’s like having your gun show endorsed by Eric Harris and Dylan Kleibold.

Founded in 1987 by Paul Cameron, the Family Research Institute (FRI) claims to produce “cutting-edge research” on “family policy” issues. In truth, Cameron is the longtime house psychologist of the anti-gay movement ‚Äö√Ñ√Æ and one of the most thoroughly discredited researchers in America.

After losing his job teaching psychology at the University of Nebraska in 1980, Cameron began to crank out “scientific” studies that bolstered the claims of Anita Bryant, Jerry Falwell and other early anti-gay crusaders that gay people were “diseased perverts” with a program to molest children and demolish America.

Cameron’s first organization, the Institute for the Scientific Investigation of Sexuality, distributed hysterical pamphlets falsely alleging that gay people were much more likely than others to be serial murderers, child molesters and intentional disease-spreaders.

What kind of hatred must a zealot like Cameron be harboring that would drive him to such lengths? How can one person hate so much for so long and still have anything resembling a soul? And how can such an inveterate (and possibly also invertebrate) hater claim with a straight face and a pure heart to be a Christian? Clearly, the concept of Christian love and charity doesn’t even begin to register in Cameron’s pointy li’l haid.

What amazes me is the degree to which Cameron will go to spread his lies and hatred. I can understand that he doesn’t support the gay lifestyle; that’s his prerogative. But to pursue such a hateful agenda, fueled by so much dishonesty, ignorance, and fear? There are times when Paul Cameron makes Adolf Hitler look like a choirboy.

He told the 1985 Conservative Political Action Committee conference that “extermination of homosexuals” might be needed in the next three to four years. He has advocated tattooing AIDS patients in the face, and banishment to a former leper colony for any patient who resisted. He has called for gay bars to be closed and gays to be registered with the government.

Cameron even has called AIDS a “godsend,” and it was for him: Though he was kicked out of the American Psychological Association for ethical violations in 1983 (he was alleged to have used unsound methods and misrepresented the work of others) ‚Äö√Ñ√Æ and then, after pawning himself off as a sociologist, declared “not a sociologist” by the American Sociological Association ‚Äö√Ñ√Æ his studies alleging that homosexuals were intentionally spreading AIDS have been frequently cited by anti-gay groups and commentators like Pat Buchanan.

If Paul Cameron- and, by extension, James Dobson- is a Christian, then I’m the Queen of England. A person so driven by hatred and ignorance cannot reasonably claim to be living a Christ-like life, or to be respecting and honoring the teachings of Jesus Christ.

Yes, this is a free country, and the right to free speech and expression means that knuckle-dragging troglodytes like Paul Cameron are free to spew their hatred and venom in whatever direction they so choose. It also means that good and decent people- including honest, decent, God-fearing Christians- are free to expose Cameron for what he is- an agent of hatred, ignorance, and fear who knows nothing of Christianity.

Since when is this flavor of virulent, unadulterated hatred a “family value”?
