MY NEW HERO #75: Former President Jimmy Carter

CRAWFORD, Tex., May 20 ‚Äö√Ñ√Æ It is a relatively genteel club, with a membership that has dwindled to four in number: Those who know, firsthand, the pressures and challenges of being the leader of the free world. That shared knowledge has traditionally transcended politics to bring together such diverse political figures as President Bush and his predecessor, Bill Clinton; Mr. Clinton and the first President Bush; and Jimmy Carter and the late Gerald Ford. But, in a break with this norm, Mr. Carter delivered a blistering critique of President Bush in two interviews released Saturday. And, on Sunday, the White House responded in kind, calling his comments “sad” and Mr. Carter himself “irrelevant.”

I’ve never been a big fan of Jimmy Carter, the President. At a time when the country needed firm, resolute leadership, Carter seemed more comfortable with moralizing and trading in platitudes. As an ex-President, however, Carter definitely seems to have hit his stride. As this Bush Administration has continued circling the drain, Carter has moved ever closer to calling Our Glorious and Benevolent Leader © out for his criminal ineptitude. This weekend, he finally crossed the line, and when a former President calls a sitting President and his administration the “worst in history”, you know something’s terribly wrong.

It’s been customary in recent history that former Presidents refrain from criticizing the performance of the current President. After all, who knows better just how tough the job of leading the Free World is? Even Bill Clinton, who has more reason that anyone to criticize King George the Worst © has kept his powder dry. That Jimmy Carter, ever the genteel Southerner, has violated custom to criticize Commander Codpiece © speaks volumes about just how poorly this current Administration has performed.

What’s truly sad about this is that the only response that Bush Administration apologists spokespeople have been able to come up with is to shoot the messenger. I suppose when you can’t argue on the merits, that’s your only viable option, eh?

CRAWFORD, Texas (AP) — The nasty words between President Bush and former President Jimmy Carter continued Sunday.

In a biting rebuke to Carter calling the Bush administration the “worst in history,” the White House on Sunday dismissed Carter as “increasingly irrelevant.”

Carter was quoted Saturday in the Arkansas Democrat Gazette as saying “I think as far as the adverse impact on the nation around the world, this administration has been the worst in history.” (Read full story)

The Georgia Democrat said Bush had overseen an “overt reversal of America’s basic values” as expressed by previous administrations, including that of his own father, former President George H.W. Bush.

White House spokesman Tony Fratto shot back Sunday from Crawford, Texas, where Bush spent the weekend.

“I think it’s sad that President Carter’s reckless personal criticism is out there,” said Fratto. “I think it’s unfortunate. And I think he is proving to be increasingly irrelevant with these kinds of comments.”

The only thing “increasingly irrelevant” is the continued bleating of apologists for Our Glorious and Benevolent Leader © , who, while refusing to address the substance of Carter’s criticism, feel free to engage is the childish equivalent of “I know I am, but what are you””. They have no response because there IS none. Administration apologists are reduced to spouting propaganda points and deflecting criticism by shooting the messenger, because they know they cannot argue on the accomplishments of King George the Worst © .

The sad thing is that President Carter is right, and no one in this Administration has an effective rebuttal. The ship is sinking, and rather than bailing water, the spinmeisters have decided that denial is the best strategy.

NOW CAN WE IMPEACH THE LYING, INCOMPETENT BASTARD?
