Taking care of what's REALLY important

Bush Told War Is Harming The GOP: A Warning on Eve Of Vote on New Bill

House Republican moderates, in a remarkably blunt White House meeting, warned President Bush this week that his pursuit of the war in Iraq is risking the future of the Republican Party and that he cannot count on GOP support for many more months. The meeting, which ran for an hour and a half Tuesday afternoon, was disclosed by participants yesterday as the House prepared to vote this evening on a spending bill that could cut funding for the Iraq war as early as July…. But the meeting between 11 House Republicans, Bush, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates, White House political adviser Karl Rove and presidential press secretary Tony Snow was perhaps the clearest sign yet that patience in the party is running out.

I find it interesting that the problem that Republicans in the House of Representatives are only now having problems with the war in Iraq. So what’s the big deal? No, it’s not the stalemate and the lack of progress in Iraq. It’s not even the growing American body count. The lives of our sons and daughters are after all, a small price to be paid to secure the legacy of Our Glorious and Benevolent Leader © . Hey, there are history books to be written, no?

No, the problem is that the clusterf—k in Iraq is becoming so unpopular that it may be impacting Republican electoral prospects in 2008. Now THERE’S a problem. Republican Congressmen are worried about losing their jobs, NOT about the lives of the children of their constituents. Yes, if there’s one thing that reigns in Washington regardless of the party in power, it’s self-interest.

Everyone in attendance seemed to agree that the Iraqi government needs to be held increasingly accountable for affairs on the ground in Iraq. More than four years into the war, and they’re just NOW figuring this out? Jeebus, people, how many more of our sons and daughters have to die before y’all get off your asses and DO something? I realize that keeping your jobs is Job One- y’all probably have mortgages, car notes, and private school tuition to pay- but can we lose the rampant self-interest for a while? At least long enough to figure out how we might exit this quagmire with the minimum number of casualties??

So far, you’ve allowed this sorry excuse for a President to waste almost 3,500 lives…and for what? What do we have to show for all the American blood that’s been spilled? Are we any closer to “victory” than we were four years ago? Have we installed a functional, effective democratic system of government in Iraq? Not exactly…. “Mission Accomplished?” Right…more like “Status Quo Accomplished.”

WE DESERVE BETTER. And so do our men and women in uniform. They deserve better than having their lives viewed as the price to be paid for preserving the jobs of Republican congressmen. Isn’t it about time we began demanding that the lives of our sons and daughters become part of the equation?
