Doing the right thing for the right reason

Security guards rescue kitten tied to tracks: They saw a man and woman tying the tiny calico at railroad

MY NEW HEROES #77: John Hernandez & Jacob Salinas

SAN ANTONIO — The calico kitten was riddled with fleas and so scrawny you could see its backbone. Yet the animal was in far better shape Thursday morning than it had been several hours earlier, when two off-duty security guards on a secluded South Side road saw a man and a woman tying the creature to some railroad tracks with a shoelace, a police report said. The couple got away, but the kitten, christened Tracks, got a temporary home with one of its rescuers.

I’ve always believed that true heroism isn’t doing the big, flashy, theatrical stuff- the things that get you on the 6:00 news. Sure, rushing into a burning building to save a child or a damsel in distress is compelling stuff, but the real heroes are the ones who never hear about. These folks are doing the right things for the right reasons on a daily basis. Sure, without a fair amount of media attention, the act of John Hernandez and Jacob Salinas would never have been known. Nonetheless, they did the right thing for the right reasons…and in this day and age, that’s never something to be taken lightly.

What sort of human abortion could find anything resembling pleasure in orchestrating the cruel, torturous demise of something as frail and harmless as a kitten? It’s difficult for me to grasp what would drive a person to tie a kitten to a railroad track. Thankfully, thanks to Hernandez and Salinas, this story will have a happy ending. Two anonymous people doing the right thing for the right reason. Now there’s some high-grade heroism, eh??

If there is any justice in this world, and if karma means anything thing at all, the people responsible for tying the kitten to the tracks will be caught…and they will be tied to the tracks as punishment. I’ll sell the tickets….
