Another DUMB@$$ AWARD wiener

A war hero from Huntsville rues a decision made in Afghanistan

DUMB@$$ AWARD wiener #611: Marcus Luttrell

Luttrell…expresses frequent disdain for the “liberal media” and “liberals” in general, whom he blames for imposing naive rules of engagement that jeopardize American lives, and for second-guessing difficult, split-second decisions soldiers in combat must make.

I should begin by stating for the record that if anyone is qualified to be considered a hero, it would be Marcus Luttrell. He’s fought for his country, enduring privations and risking his neck in ways most of us would never dream of, much less agree to. (Read the entire story, it’s truly an amazing tale of survival and morality unless ANYTHING most of us will ever experience.) I admire him for what he’s done and the service he’s provided this country. That admiration has nothing to do with my beef with Luttrell, however.

The reason I’ve bestowed the latest DUMB@$$ AWARD upon Luttrell is for his attitude toward those of us who happen not to share his politics. Like so many Conservative Republicans, he seems to view those of on the Left as almost sub-human. He spits out the term “Liberal” as if the very act of holding the beliefs associated with that school of thought is a crime against humanity. The arrogance and ignorance displayed by Luttrell sickens me. I don’t begrudge him his beliefs; he was, after all, fighting for, among other things, the right to hold those beliefs. What angers me is his arrogant, self-righteous dismissal of Liberals as clueless pussies without a shred of common sense.

If Luttrell could have listened to himself, and if he possessed even a shred of integrity, he’d agreed that the following makes him sound pretty ignorant as well:

“It was the stupidest, most southern-fried, lamebrained decision I ever made in my life,” Luttrell writes. “I must have been out of my mind. I had actually cast a vote which I knew could sign our death warrant. I’d turned into a (expletive) liberal, a half-assed, no-logic nitwit, all heart, no brain, and the judgment of a jack rabbit.

I admire Luttrell’s heroism and his courage and creativity in surviving what had to be a harrowing and terrifying situation. What I do not admire is his arrogance, conceit, self-righteousness, and careless ignorance. He’s free to express himself and hold whatever beliefs he chooses; this is still, after all, a free country. Of course, I’m free to call him on his bulls—t and free to tell him that he can kiss my @$$. It’s a free country, remember?

Jeebus, what an arrogant, self-righteous DUMB@$$….

(UPDATE: I just watched John Roberts interview Luttrell on CNN’s American Morning, and my admiration for Luttrell’s courage and ability to survive knows no bounds. The man truly is the definition of a hero. Thankfully, his interview was free of the self-righteousness that was so evident in the Houston Chronicle article. Luttrell has faced death and had to deal with a moral dilemma unlike ANYTHING 99.95% of Americans will ever have to face. That he’s here to tell his story is a monument to his strength and his courage.)
