REPORT: Public Expresses Solid Opposition To Bush On Iraq

(Thanks to Brian Kane for the IMPEACH NOW banner that I’ve shamelessly lifted…er, liberated from him…you’ll be seeing a LOT more of it….)

But while conservative lawmakers are dissenting in greater numbers, the White House is still insisting that we are making progress in Iraq. As recently as June 18, Tony Snow maintained that President Bush is “impressed and reassured by the progress [Iraq is] making on political, security and economic reforms.” Despite these rosy assessments however, recent public opinion polls suggest that most Americans aren’t buying what the President is selling.

Once upon a time, in a land not so very far away (and a land that should look surprisingly familiar to Americans), we dealt in the truth…or as much as you can deal in the truth when soundbites extend for about as long as the average American attention span. Presidents told us the truth because that was what we expected of them. OK, so the truth wasn’t always what we wanted to hear- and it wasn’t always the truth- but it was at least packaged in a wrapper that we could convince ourselves was something closer to the truth. We could generally recognize the liars, because they were lousy liars.

Then along came Ronald Reagan, an actor who could lie to Americans with a straight face. We believed, because we wanted so desperately to believe. The truth became what was marketed to us as The Truth. Marketing replaced political persuasion and ideology/theology replaced abject truth as political currency.

Now we have an Administration that couldn’t tell the truth if their lives depended on it, because they’ve spent that past six-plus years lying, spinning, and propagandizing their way into a corner. Even if Our Glorious and Benevolent Leader © and his neoConservative henchmen suddenly had a collective attack of conscience and came clean, there’d be no way most Americans could or would believe them. When your Chief Propagandist Press Secretary is the modern reincarnation of Josef Goebbels Tony Snow, who never met a talking point he couldn’t shill for, how CAN we recognize and accept something as the truth. We’ve been lied to about Iraq since 9.12.01. NOW we’re supposed to believe that the propaganda pablum Administration’s sunny status reports on the war in Iraq are suddenly honest and believable?

NOW CAN WE IMPEACH THE LYING, MURDERING BASTARDS??
