It’s a grand country, with plenty of space, more good people than not and a generally decent government, my misgivings about the current minority in Ottawa notwithstanding. I may write more later, but for now, my wish for Canada on her birthday is that she be more Canadian, and that her leaders be more proud of being Canadian and both less fearful of the United States and more willing to entertain the idea that Canada’s best destiny might lie not in even deeper entanglement and “cooperation” with our cousins to the south, but in a path that walks carefully, and if necessary, defiantly away. May Canada be, forever, both strong and free.
