FBI director appears to contradict Gonzales
F.B.I. Chief Challenges Gonzales’s Testimony
WASHINGTON, July 26 — The dispute over the truthfulness of Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales reached a new intensity today as the F.B.I. Director, Robert S. Mueller 3rd, contradicted Mr. Gonzales’s sworn testimony before a Senate committee. Mr. Mueller told the House Judiciary Committee that the Bush administration’s secret eavesdropping program was the main topic at an encounter in the hospital room of then-Attorney General John Ashcroft on March 10, 2004, contrary to what Mr. Gonzales told a Senate panel on Tuesday. At the time, Mr. Gonzales was the White House counsel, and Mr. Ashcroft was recovering from gall bladder surgery. That March night, Mr. Gonzales went to the hospital room with Andrew H. Card Jr., then White House chief of staff. In his testimony before the Senate panel on Tuesday, Mr. Gonzales said the subject in the hospital room was “intelligence activities” under debate in the administration, but not the secret eavesdropping program. But Mr. Mueller contradicted that version of events today, several hours after four Senate Democrats called for the appointment of a special counsel to investigate whether Mr. Gonzales perjured himself before Congress.

I’m profoundly saddened this morning, not by anything that’s happened to me, but what’s happening to my country. If any of y’all harbored any lingering doubt that our government is being run by a cabal of liars and thugs, yesterday’s testimony by FBI Director Robert Mueller should have removed those doubts. His testimony exposed, finally and without any doubt, that Attorney General Alberto Gonzales is a liar and a criminal- and not a particularly good one at that.
The fact that BushWorld is lousy with liars, thugs, and propagandists comes as no particular surprise. What I find so thoroughly disturbing, though, is that the highest law enforcement officer in the land is a criminal and a perjuror. He has enabled and participated in this Administration’s efforts to circumvent both federal law and the Constitution in their continuing efforts to create something close to a police state.
What saddens me most is the realization that Gonzales’ lies and his pathetic attempts to obfuscate, prevaricate, and cover his tracks no doubt only begin to scratch the surface of this Administration’s perfidy. For the longest time, I didn’t want to believe that that those charged with protecting this country and the rule of law that holds it together could be actively subverting the very foundation of this nation. I can no longer delude myself- to even the slightest degree- into believing that those in power have the best interests of this country in mind. However much you and I might not want to believe this, the government of the United States of American is being run by a cabal of thugs bent on concentrating power in the hands of the Executive Branch. If that means breaking laws and doing an end-run around the Constitution, so be it. Power accrues to those willing to do what’s required to grasp it…and you can’t make an omelette without breaking a few eggs, eh?
Congratulations, America. You’ve done this through your inattention, your unwillingness to look past the propaganda, and your inability/refusal to think critically. Somehow, more than 54 million of y’all thought Our Glorious and Benevolent Leader © was the man to lead us into the future. Nice work, DUMB@$$E$….
It’s been said that we get exactly the quality of leadership we deserve. Look around, and you’ll see the absolute, immutable truth of that statement. It’s not a pretty picture….
Enjoy the Bill of Rights while you still can….

Mueller could be a hero, as could a few of the other people of good conscience in the Justice Department (there surely must be a few left) by simply resigning. Just announce to the country that he no longer wishes to be in the service of people who have no integrity and no personal honor. They could do it today.
How long would Gonzo, or maybe even Bush or Cheney last in the face of such a principled resignation? Oh sure, Orrin Hatch might continue to support them, and maybe Senator Sessions, probably Cornyn. But Gonzales, Bush and Cheney would be history.
What saddens me worse is where the hell is the froth and fury amoung the press and populace of this god damned country when these things are announced?
Bill and Hillary Clinton marched in my hometown 4th of July parade this month. The local VFW refused to march for a "draft dodger". The froth and spittle boil up at the mere mention of their names around conservatives to this day. And they did what, precisely, that was so god awful?
Yet, here we are in 2007, led by a band of theives who's lies are so numerous and muderous that the population doesn't even notice anymore. Just like another bomb in Baghdad, it barely registers a blip on the radar. What is going to have to happen for these people to wake up and get mad about something?
Amen and well said, Jack. The power has been grabbed and the laws abridged to make it so. The sheepul are just beginning to realize freedom has been hijacked.
Between the signing statements, executive orders, and unprecedented secrecy associated with this administration there's not much NOT to be mad about.
Wednesday in Los Angeles, federal agents raided another 10 clinics, seized private property and money, and deprived hundreds of patients of a medication the State of California has declared legal.
I hope that Oscar the cat decides to spend the night at the White House.
But failing that, there's always Ron Paul!
At this point, Oscar just might get the most support among Republican voters. All he has to do is announce that he's contemplating a run. Run, Oscar, run!!
I hope that Oscar the cat decides to spend the night at the White House.
I also would rather see Dick Cheney as president.
