Poll: GOP Likes Giuliani’s Electability

With many Republicans increasingly pessimistic about holding the White House in 2008, electability has become former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani’s most appealing attribute. A new Washington Post-ABC News poll of the Republican field shows Giuliani with a sizeable lead over his three principal rivals…. Giuliani’s frontrunner status is fueled by a broad-based perception that he is the party’s most electable candidate. Nearly half of Republicans believe Giuliani is their party’s best chance of winning in November 2008; that is three or four times higher than the percentage mentioning other candidates. Democrats and independents also said Giuliani would represent the Republicans’ best shot at holding onto the White House.

So, I see that being on your third marriage, being pro-life, and just generally being fairly liberal on social issues isn’t necessarily an impediment to electoral success as a Republicans- because it’s all about winning. Sure, it would be nice to have a hawkish, pro-life, Evangelical, kill-‘em-all-let-God-sort-‘em-out Red Meat Conservative to carry the GOP banner into the 2008 election season, but sometimes practicality has to win out. What…like you want a Dimmocrat defiling the White House for four years? Why, Hillary is probably planning all sorts of Lesbian bacchanals for her inaugural even as we speak. No, it’s all about winning, and while ideological purity is all well and good, sometimes a faithful Conservative has to do what a faithful Conservative has to do, right? After all, do we really want to face the alternative- government run by people WHO AREN’T LIKE US?? Perish the thought…after all, who else is going to protect our social perks and tax breaks?

I can’t imagine that there could be any greater proof of the moral, ideological, and philosophical corruption of the GOP than Rudy Giuliani being the party’s 2008 nominee. If Giuliani is truly embraced by the Right-wing religious nutjobs, then what other demonstration could you POSSIBLY require of the thoroughly cynical demise of the Republican party?

Then again, I imagine it will prove highly entertaining to watch the GOP implode on 11.4.08….
