Hispanics exceed Anglos in Harris County: Census shows area leads the nation in growth of minorities
In a powerful sign of the region’s growing diversity, more Hispanics than Anglos now live in Harris County as it led the nation in growth of minority residents, according to Census Bureau estimates to be released today. This historic demographic shift reflects persistent immigration, high birth rates among Latinos and ongoing migration to outlying suburban counties, experts say. And a dramatic increase in Harris County’s black population is partly attributed to an influx of residents displaced by Hurricane Katrina.
I have seen the future of our great nation…and it’s right here in Harris County. It’s official; good, God-fearing White Folk are now a minority here. This, of course, should come as no surprise to anyone living here. There are places around Houston where you’re more likely to hear Spanish than English, and in many areas, White faces are few and far between. Talk about the Land of Opportunity, eh? There are parts of Houston, particularly in the southwest part of town, where signs in Vietnamese are as common as signs in English.
If you’re one of those who feel that America belongs to White People, you’re probably not going to be living in Harris County much longer. Then again, if you love ethnic food, this is probably where you want to be.
The interesting thing about the demographic evolution of this area will be how government deals with and adapts to the ever-changing ethnic composition of the Houston area. It’s not going to be enough to expect everyone to speak English. More and more, we’ll be dealing with Texans for whom English isn’t their native language, and if we want to survive and prosper, it’s going to have to be White Folks who will need to adapt.
Stay tuned…this could get interesting.
