Idaho Senator’s Colleagues Say He Should Resign

I’m by no means a supporter of Larry Craig. The man is a self-righteous, hypocritical, mean-spirited Republican troll of the first order. He’s also a human being who’s managed to make a very stupid mistake, one that will likely end his political career and forever tarnish him in the eyes of his constituents. Most of his Senate colleagues, and a majority of Idahoans, think Craig should resign, a sentiment with which I wholeheartedly concur. Realistically, it’s unlikely that anyone, even someone as craven and hypocritical as Craig, would be able to resist the s—tstorm of pressure being brought to bear on him from all corners of the political, religious, and moral world. If Craig does refuse to resign, he will be so crippled and ineffective that Idaho will essentially be down to one Senator. For the good of the Senate, his constituents, and most of all for his own good, Larry Craig must do the right thing and resign his Senate seat. NOW.

Larry Craig should (indeed, MUST) resign…and I believe that he eventually will. What other realistic option exists for him?? For all intents and purposes, his life, career, and credibility have been ruined. Granted, Craig has only himself to blame for his precipitous fall, but there’s no reason why I have to continue to participate in the piling on. As tempting as it may be, and as easy a target as Larry Craig is, I’m going to have to step off this train.

There are certainly no lack of pundits and late-night talk show hosts willing to go the extra mile to ridicule Craig. Whether or not you feel that Craig is deserving of such opprobrium, the man is a human being with feelings and emotions. Though he hasn’t often exhibited much in the way of understanding or compassion himself, I see no reason why I need to participate in the continuing cascade of ridicule being heaped on him. I will continue to believe that Larry Craig must resign; there simply is no other credible option open to him. This is a situation, though, where I’m trying to walk a mile in the man’s shoes…and I’m coming to understand that piling on and continuing to fund humor at Craig’s expense serves no useful purpose. I’m bigger than that; I think we all are (or at least should be).

This crushing shame is the sort of thing that drives men to commit suicide. It’s happened before in Washington, and I’m choosing not to participate in behavior that might possibly contribute to that outcome. I feel sorry for Larry Craig as a human being, and I feel for his wife, who must be an absolute saint to stick with him. I will continue to insist that Craig resign immediately and without reservation, but I will also hope that he might find the wherewithal to restore honesty and integrity to his life. As a man and a human being (if not as a politician), Larry Craig deserves a second chance, an opportunity to put his life back together and to make something positive out of whatever time he has left on this Earth.

Enough is enough.
