Parody? Deadly serious? Is there a difference?

It’s been said that the true test of an effective parody is that it leaves you wondering if it even is a parody. Out there enough to be satirical, yet credible enough to be deadly serious, you just can’t figure out what to make of it. Welcome to Baptists for Brownback 2008, a site so artful in it’s satire (at least I think it’s satire) and so overtly over-the-top in it’s religiosity that…well, I’m not quite certain what to make of it. Most of us know what a ridiculously self-righteous uber-religious freak show Sen. Sam Brownshirtback (R-KS). I mean, the man makes John Ashcroft look like a gay activist. In light of this, it doesn’t exactly strain the imagination to believe that some of Brownback’s holier-than-thou supporters could in all seriousness put up a site like Baptists for Brownback 2008.

I especially enjoyed the Hellbound page, a compendium of all those evil libertines clearly barrelling down the express lane to the Dark Side. I can only hope that someday I would be perceived as enough of a threat to the great nation’s moral fiber that my name would be included in such a list. Yes, many aspire, but few attain….

And it doesn’t get much better than this:

Gainesville is breeding ground for Liberalism as evidenced by the numerous hippies and homosexuals seen loitering along side the expressway underpass. At a local gas station, where Daniel, my husband, was refueling the Hummer, we had a group of college-aged youth come up to us and attack us verbally and physically for having the good sense to drive a safe, reliable vehicle. When I told these misfits that we were a Christian family and were protected by angels of God, they cursed the name of Jesus eleven times (I counted) and spewed all sorts of hateful Liberal rhetoric at us.

Honestly, I feared that for our lives given the brutality of the attack. Obviously Gainesville, Florida is a dangerous place for anyone, particularly Christian Republicans.

Yeah, I’d imagine it’s got to be difficult being one of the Chosen, constantly fending off temptation and immorality for all quarters. In this day and age, where Evil, sin, and licentiousness rule the roost, being a good, God-fearing Christian Republican has got to be tough. Thankfully for them, the good folks at Baptists for Brownback 2008 are better than all of us…and they’re not afraid to make you aware of it. If you’re looking for subtlety of belief and a tolerance for religious differences…uh, you’ll want to steer clear of Baptists for Brownback 2008. Then again, if you want to try and figure out if these folks are seriously or just pulling a monstrous joke on all of us, knock yourself out. Just stay away from Gainseville, FL.

You’ve been warned….
