Flag saved from dishonor by dogs: Complaints get a hydrant removed from a Hillsboro dog park
HILLSBORO — Dogs at play. Go, dogs, go. No, dogs, no. Not there! Not on a fire hydrant painted with the American flag, some people would say. People like Louanne Douris, a retired U.S. Foreign Service officer. She was horrified at the thought of dogs urinating on just such a hydrant when she saw a photo of one at the Hillsboro dog park in The Sunday Oregonian. She hurried to e-mail the newspaper and officials at the park department, which had named Hondo Dog Park in honor of a Hillsboro police dog that was killed in crossfire 10 years ago while chasing a suspect. “That gallant dog must be turning in his grave at the thought of the flag being desecrated every time a dog pees on that hydrant!” Douris, an Aloha resident, wrote in one e-mail.
Welcome to another episode of “Great Moments in Anthropomorphizing”! On today’s show, we’re going to see how a DUMB@$$ can completely inconvenience and aggravate any number of dog owners by projecting her own narrow prejudices onto a deceased police dog. It was a simple enough thing- a flag-themed fire hydrant designed to honor a fallen police dog. Rather than focus on that aspect of the hydrant, though, Ms. Douris was worried that Hondo, the police dog honored by the hydrant, would posthumously think himself dishonored by dogs urinating on it. Well, gee, what do dogs do? They pee on things, no? I doubt there’s much in the way of rational thought processes taking place when they’re marking their spot- much less thinking, “Take THAT, you rat bastard!! May you rot in the Hell you so richly deserve!!”
No, this sadly is yet another case of a DUMB@$$ who feels that she has the perfect right to inflict her ignorance and prejudice upon an entire community. In doing so, she’s let some feeling that she has in fact dishonored Hondo. Why? Well, because that what DUMB@$$E$ do. They assume that their tunnel vision and arrogance trumps anyone else’s point of view.
Nice work, eh? American soldiers are being shipped home in flag-draped boxes from a pointless, immoral war in Iraq, and Ms. DUMB@$$ is having conniptions over a fire hydrant? Jeebus, get a grip, willya??
