It's easier to tear someone down than to take their message to heart

Activists take Al Gore to task on his diet

He may be the hero of the environmental movement for his crusade against global warming but Al Gore is about to be targeted by animal rights activists over his carnivorous contribution to greenhouse gases. Citing United Nations research that the meat industry is worse for the environment than driving and flying, animal rights groups are directing a campaign at the former American vice-president’s diet. When he delivers a lecture on global warming in Denver next month, protesters will display billboards bearing a cartoon image of Mr Gore eating a drumstick and the message: “Too chicken to go vegetarian? Meat is the No 1 cause of global warming”…. The campaign is being organised by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta) and is backed by other animal rights groups…. “For Al Gore, the fact that his diet is a leading contributor to global warming is a highly inconvenient truth - pun intended,” said Matt Prescott, a spokesman for Peta.

I never cease to be amazed at the lengths that some folks will go to discredit Al Gore. Not that the man is the definitive voice on global warming, but I suppose anytime someone speaks up and raises some inconvenient truths, he becomes the personification of the old Japanese proverb, “the nail that sticks up gets hammered down.” From where I sit, Gore should be universally applauded for devoting so much energy to alerting us to what we’re doing to our planet and it’s environment. Sadly, there are those who seem to expect something close to environmental sainthood from Gore.

“Oh, look…the Green Crusader is flying on a Gulfstream! What a (&^%$#@ hypocrite….”

“Oh, look…Captain Enviro has a high utility bill! What a (&^%$#@ hypocrite….”

“Oh, look…Al Gore is still using electricity!! What a (&^%$#@ hypocrite….”

Apparently, speaking your mind on the dangers that industrialization poses to our planet and our future means that you have to be a perfect example of green living. Until and unless Al Gore walks from coast to cost, lives off the land, and uses leaves and twigs in place of toilet paper, he’s apparently unworthy of being taken seriously, and we therefore don’t have to worry about changing our habits. What a bunch of (&^%$#@ hypocrites….

If global warming deniers and those so tied into their lifestyles can focus on Gore’s alleged inconsistencies and hypocrisy, this mean that they never have to do anything different. No, Al Gore is not the perfect environmentalist. Indeed, no REASONABLE person would expect that of him. Then again, those so thoroughly invested in denying the reality of global warming will spare no effort and expense to tear Gore down. Rather than listening to the message, they’ve chosen to focus on then man- he IS a (&^%$#@ America-hating Librul, after all. And this (&^%$#@ hypocrite want’s me to give up my H2 so the (&^%$#@ environment will be better off. Hey, this isn’t some Third World hellhole we live in; this is American…and if I want to drive an Urban Assault Vehicle that gets 8 MPG, that’s my right in a free society.

Yep, it’s a whole lot easy to ignore the message when you can kill the messenger, eh? What a bunch of (&^%$#@ hypocrites….
