Craig supporters call for boycott of Minneapolis airport
BATTLE GROUND, Wash. — Supporters of Sen. Larry Craig with the American Land Rights Association are calling for a boycott of the Minneapolis-Saint Paul Airport. The Battle Ground (Washington) based association says airport police who arrested the senator in a men’s room sex sting are responsible for weakening private property rights in the West. Craig is a Republican member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee. The American Land Rights Association, which has an office in Washington, DC, advocates for the use of federal lands and against what it calls federal “land grabs.” The association says the airport should apologize to Craig for what it calls “ambushing” the senator.
Call me silly, but this seems rather pointless- a lot like shooting your cousin’s dog because your cousin knocked up your sister. Then again, if the fine, God-fearing citizens at The American Land Rights Association get nothing else out of the deal, they’re getting their 15 minutes of fame…after which, if there’s a God, they’ll once again descend into richly-deserved obscurity.
If memory serves, Sen. DUMB@$$ was arrested by a Minneapolis police officer. Sure, the (alleged, of course) lewd behavior happened to have taken place in a men’s room at the Minneapolis-St. Paul airport, but it could have happened anywhere. And as for “ambushing” the senator…well, the DUMB@$$ did plead guilty to a charge of disorderly conduct, didn’t he? What seems to be lost in the backwash and the sturm und drang is that the judge in the case only allowed Craig to enter his guilty plea when he was able to ascertain to his satisfaction that Craig, in acting as his own attornery, had a fool for a client fully understood the ramifications of his undertaking to enter a guilty plea. For him to now claim that he didn’t understand what he was doing because no attorney was present is patently absurd- but for our purposes here, I digress.
For someone- anyone- to claim in all seriousness that Sen. DUMB@$$ was somehow “ambushed”, or that Craig is being persecuted strains the bounds of credibility. Larry Craig was arrested (and pled guilty) for behavior considered illegal in the jurisdiction in which he was arrested. The American Land Rights Association has no dog in this fight, other than the fact that Sen. DUMB@$$ has been one of their staunchest allies. For these folks to seriously be calling for a boycott of the Minneapolis-St. Paul airport only makes me think that perhaps they’ve had one too many beers…and that perhaps someone ought to confiscate their car keys before they hurt someone.
Then again, there are few things more entertaining than watching stupid people in large groups acting as if they actually have something to contribute to the public discourse. Better to be thought a fool than to belong to the American Land Rights Association and remove all doubt, eh?
