I’m here to tell you that the American people stand with our troops. No matter what you might read in the newspapers, people do appreciate the gift of freedom.

Yes, no matter what you might read in the newspapers. Today's New York Times, for example, has a lengthy piece about Bush and the war, and the extent to which Christian evangelicals have largely abandoned him - mostly because of the war.

Mustn't have the troops reading that.
