Scandal brewing at Oral Roberts U.

TULSA, Okla. (AP) ‚Äö√Ñ√Æ Twenty years ago, televangelist Oral Roberts said he was reading a spy novel when God appeared to him and told him to raise $8 million for Roberts’ university, or else he would be “called home.”…. Now, his son, Oral Roberts University President Richard Roberts, says God is speaking again, telling him to deny lurid allegations in a lawsuit that threatens to engulf this 44-year-old Bible Belt college in scandal. Richard Roberts is accused of illegal involvement in a local political campaign and lavish spending at donors’ expense, including numerous home remodeling projects, use of the university jet for his daughter’s senior trip to the Bahamas, and a red Mercedes convertible and a Lexus SUV for his wife, Lindsay. She is accused of dropping tens of thousands of dollars on clothes, awarding nonacademic scholarships to friends of her children and sending scores of text messages on university-issued cell phones to people described in the lawsuit as “underage males.”

Once upon a time, I actually believed that Christians cared about living their beliefs and following the teachings of Jesus Christ. Well, OK; so most Christians do, and most are good and decent people. Like anything else, though, all it takes is a few bad apples to spoil the whole bunch. I could be pardoned for cynically thinking that all Christians are corrupt, self-absorbed, self-righteous assholes who care only for their own self-aggrandizement, but I know that’s not the case. Thankfully, I know enough Christians who good and decent people to understand that most Christians take their beliefs seriously. Most Christians don’t view their beliefs as justification for a sense of entitlement and greedy self-righteousness. Then again, these good folks aren’t the ones trumpeting their holiness as they’re looting the temple and engaging in all manner of corrupt, self-serving behavior.

The truth of what’s been happening (or not) at Oral Roberts University remains to be seen. What I am enjoying though, is the spectacle of watching the uber-righteous Richard Roberts accuse his detractors of essentially being minions of Satan. Then again, I suppose if you see yourself as a morally superior human being and above the chattering, heathen hordes, it’s easy to assume that those who are not behind you 100% are ipso facto out to hasten your demise.

Yes, say what you will, but not only will the self-righteous always be among us, they certainly are entertaining. It would be easy, and perhaps overly simplistic, to assume that where there is smoke there is also at least some fire, but Richard Roberts does seem to be going into hyper-drive when it comes to justifying the actions of both himself and his wife…who has her own sets of issues and questions to deal with.

Stay tuned. This story promises to becomes significantly more entertaining as things develop. Hmm…money, luxury cars, underage boys, and likely yet more corruption to be revealed? Man, I can hardly wait….
