David Vitter Is So Screwed

WTOP is reporting that alleged D.C. Madam Deborah Jeane Palfrey, who is in no way is a self-promoter, wants to force Sen. David Vitter to tell a judge about his experiences with her escort service. We fully expect to finally hear Vitter wax poetic about late nights of dripping candle wax over nipples, Tabasco-soaked butt plugs and gentle pre-dawn floggings. Or, in other words, Tuesdays.

Ah, don’tcha just love it when a card-carrying member of the “family values” brigade comes crashing down to Earth from his holier-than-thou perch? David Vitter, who’s built his political career on the soft sand of over moralizing and pandering to ignorant, Right-wing nutjobs, may be about to get his well-deserved comeuppance…and it promises to be quite entertaining, if not particularly safe for impressionable young audiences.

Personally, I could care less if David Vitter buggers bottles of habanero sauce in his off hours. I believe that the private life of public figures is, by and large, none of the public’s damn business. This rule goes by the wayside, though, when said public figure is exposed as a cheap, two-bit hypocrite and serial philanderer. Someone like this deserves to be exposed and ridiculed. Someone beat me to the exposed part of the equation, but ridicule? Hey, that’s my specialty…and few Republicans make for a more obvious target for ridicule than Vitter.

What interests me about Vitter’s case is how little long-term interest the Mainstream Media has in his transgressions. I can’t help but think that if Vitter was a Democrat, that the cries for his head on a platter would be long and loud. The weeping and gnashing of teeth among the MSM would be heard from sea to shining sea. If you doubt me, just compare the case of Bill Clinton versus that of Vitter, Mark Foley, and so many other powerful Republicans. Hypocrisy? You tell me…ah, Hell; OF COURSE it’s hypocrisy. These are Republicans we’re talking about, and they (and their supporters in the MSM) take care of their own.

Yeah, I know….WHAT LIBERAL MEDIA? (Hey, it’s OK; at least Vitter was schtupping women and not tap-dancing in airport men’s rooms….)

The moral of this story, as if has been since the dawn of political time, is that infidelity is not a crime (or even an indiscretion) if you’re a Republican. Even among the “family values” crowd, adultery isn’t the mortal sin you might think it’s supposed to be (et tu, Rudy Giuliani?). God help you if you’re a Democrat, though, and you’re unfaithful to your wife.

Hypocrisy does seem to be the one universal Republican value, doesn’t it? Same as it ever was.
