Today's sign that the Apocalypse is upon us

Dobson camp denies Huckabee endorsement: Magazine says sources stand by story saying evangelical leader ready to hit campaign trail

James Dobson’s top aides deny a report today that the evangelical leader has decided to endorse former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee for the Republican presidential nomination. The Huckabee campaign also told WND it will issue a statement saying it is unaware of any such plans by the Focus on the Family founder, widely considered one of the most influential voices among evangelicals…. The Huckabee campaign said while it would welcome Dobson’s support, and Huckabee “greatly admires his work,” it cannot confirm the rumor, and there are no plans of an imminent announcement. Focus on the Family spokesman Nema Reza told WND that Tom Minnery, the group’s senior vice president, and communications chief Gary Schneeberger both deny the report. Any endorsement Dobson would make, however, would be as a private individual and not in his capacity as the head of Focus on the Family.

You’d think that any reasonable candidate would run from the room screaming when the hear the words “James Dobson” and “endorsement” being used in the same sentence. Of course, the 2008 Presidential campaign is no ordinary campaign season, and this sprint to the bottom is assuming epic proportions. In this race to capture the vote of the lowest common denominator, Republicans have turned into a collection of bottom feeders, hoping to suck up to the titular heads of the religious wackjob community nationwide. Now that Mike Huckabee appears close to snagging the endorsement of uber-Christian James Dobson, Huckabee appears to have lost any claim he may have once had to being a reasonable Republican and a man who can represent all Americans.

I suppose this only goes to show the depths to which a Republican will sink in order to win the Presidency. Dobson, who could only reasonably described as a “slash and burn” Christian is interested only in forcing his narrow, fear- and ignorance-based agenda upon all Americans. Clearly, Dobson understands nothing of the teachings of Jesus Christ. What he does understand is power and control, and his brand of militant, Apocalyptic Christianity is merely the prop he’s using in his drive for absolute political power. If you value the Constitution, you should be running and screaming from Dobson and his fellow travellers, because their brand of Dominionist theocracy recognizes only one authority- (their interpretation of) the Holy Bible.

So What Would Jesus Do? Well, I’m not a Christian, so I’m hardly an authority, but I’ve got to believe He’d kick Dobson’s @$$ and restore some sanity to this debate. Lord knows we could use it…and I’d really rather enjoy watching Jesus put His boot up Dobson’s @$$.
