Another DUMB@$$ AWARD wiener

More Opposition to “The Golden Compass” (thanks to Dennis for this one)

DUMB@$$ AWARD wiener #698: Ken Gurley

Opposition continues to mount to this weekend’s release of “The Golden Compass,” the film adaptation of the first book in Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy. Oddly enough, it seems that few question the assertions of its Christian critics who claim that the foundational material is patently anti-God and anti-Catholic church…. Again, I confess my ignorance about Pullman’s work and the film based on it. I wonder, however, how many families will take their children to this movie thinking that it is innocuous only to discover otherwise.

OK, so I’ll grant Gurley his right to believe as he sees fit. I find it interesting, though, that while he initially declines to pass judgement on the movie, he ends by implying that “The Golden Compass” might just be yet more anti-Catholic, anti-Christian propaganda (Cue the Bill Donohue forehead-vein-popping tirade in 4…3…2….).

Look, y’all…IT’S A MOVIE. Either see it or don’t- your choice. But can you PLEASE spare us the ignorant, self-righteous conspiracy theories? No, neither the Knights Templar, the Tri-Lateral Commission, nor United Artists (or anyone else for that matter) are conspiring to produce movies with an anti-Christian or anti-Catholic theme. If you choose to read that sort of thing into a movie, at least keep it to yourself, OK? The last thing we need right now is more Bill Donohue all over Faux News Channel looking as if he’s going to have an aneurysm.

Granted, Gurley has been good enough to at least admit that he hasn’t seen the movie, and doesn’t seem to pass judgement, but he still intimates that some good, God-fearing Christians may find their children exposed to something that (GASP!) might make them think about and perhaps question their (blind) faith. ‘Cuz Lord knows that when you examine your faith, you’re going to end up wanting to run out and soke crack while you have unprotected sex in an airport men’s room.

If your faith is built on a foundation soft enough that a movie might destroy it, you might want to take a good long look at yourself. And for people like Gurley, how about seeing the movie before you begin you begin to engage in any sort of debate about alleged “anti-Christian” or “anti-Catholic” Hollywood conspiracies?
