Will Smith has stunned the world by declaring that even Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler was essentially a “good” person. The Men In Black star, 39, is determined to see the best in people, and is convinced the former German leader did not fully understand the extent of the pain and suffering his actions would cause during his time in power in the 1930s and ’40s. He says, “Even Hitler didn’t wake up going, ‘Let me do the most evil thing I can do today’…. “I think he woke up in the morning and using a twisted, backwards logic, he set out to do what he thought was ‘good’. Stuff like that just needs reprogramming.”
OK, so I can understand and even admire Will Smith’s desire to see the good in people. It’s a good way to go through life, assuming that people are preternaturally good. Then again, there are those who, no matter how you may attempt to parse or rationalize their actions, are just plain Evil. Idi Amin. “Papa Doc” Duvalier. Josef Stalin. And there’s certainly room in that panoply for Adolf Hitler. I’d have to think that the extermination of six million innocent Jews would qualify him as preternaturally and irredeemably Evil…wouldn’t you?
Any reasonably intelligent and lucid individual could probably recognize that, when it comes to public opinionizing, there are places you don’t want to go UNDER ANY…REPEAT…ANY CIRCUMSTANCE WHATSOEVER. This is a clear-cut case of a DUMB@$$ going to a place angels fear to tread. Discussing the Holocaust can be a tenuous proposition to begin with, but when you begin treating Adolf Hitler to anything resembling or that might possibly be interpreted as a positive character analysis…well, let’s just say the train has jumped the tracks. Sometimes you should just listen to your better angels and STFU, knowhutimean??
Don’t get me wrong; I don’t think that Will Smith is a bad person. I don’t even think that he truly believes Adolf Hitler was a good person. Not even I, cynical sort that I am, believe that Smith is stupid enough to view, much less describe, Hitler in glowing terms. Even so, Smith would be well-advised to ensure that his brain is engaged before shifting his mouth in to gear, don’tchathink??
Jeebus, what a (&^%$#@ DUMB@$$…a well-meaning one, to be sure, but a DUMB@$$ nonetheless….
