So we've come to this, have we?

Huckabee Embraces Confederate Flag To Woo White Evangelicals

Columbia, S. Car. — The populist campaign of Mike Huckabee, seeking to mobilize an insurgency of white evangelicals against the Republican establishment, took an abrupt turn today after the former Arkansas governor directly appealed to voters on the issue of race, summoning his fellow candidates to stop calling for the removal of the Confederate flag from government offices…. “You don’t like people from outside the state coming in and telling you what to do with your flag. … If somebody came to Arkansas and told us what to do with our flag, we’d tell them what to do with the pole. That’s what we’d do,” he declared to applause at a campaign rally in Myrtle Beach Thursday. At the same time, an Atlanta, Georgia, based organization, Americans for the Preservation of American Culture, began running radio ads attacking John McCain for his opposition to displays of the Confederate flag on public buildings and praising Huckabee.

When I first heard this story, my initial reaction was one of disbelief, Surely, I thought, not even Mike Huckabee would be stupid enough to pander to White supremacists and rednecks in order to win the Presidency. Boy, was I wrong…and don’t call me Shirley.

“Divide and conquer” may be a solid military strategy, but I doubt Sun Tzu had ANYTHING in mind like Huckabee’s pandering to racists. Huckabee is betting the ranch that the wingnuts, zealots, and assorted other nutjobs within the Religious Right and NASCAR types will help him to attract enough attention and support to put him over the top. The scary part is that it just might work. This is a man who has all but promised to scrap the Constitution in favor of the Bible. I can hardly wait to hear what he comes up with next. Baptisms in the Reflecting Pool? Casting out demons during his State of the Union Speech? Speaking in tongues at press conferences? Calling for members of the press corps to come forward and be saved during photo ops? The possibilities boggle the mind.

I respect Christianity as a religious doctrine, but Huckabee is exactly the sort of glib wackjob who gives Christianity a bad name. I may not be an expert on this sort of thing, but I did grow up surrounded on all sides by Lutherans, so I think I’m on solid ground when I say that Jesus was NOT a Republican. Nor was he a Democrat…though I have to say that His teachings far more closely reflect the Democratic platform (How’s that for pouring gasoline on the fire?). My own feeling is that Jesus Christ was the original Liberal…you know, feed the hungry, heal the sick, clothe the poor, that sort of thing. Not exactly Republican doctrine, is it?

I’m sorry, but the LAST thing this country needs is another cabal of dominionist theocrats working to undermine the Constitution for the own self-aggrandizement. You’d think that the last seven years would have taught the American sheeple something about what can happen when zealots are handed the levers of political power. Of course, that would presume that folks were actually paying attention.

Yep, those who don’t know history are condemned to…well, how about eight more years of dominionist theocrats (&^%$#@ things up? Once again, we’ll end up with exactly the quality of leadership we deserve.

One man, one vote, one (&^%$#@ waste of time….
