I’m not really one to work myself into a lather because Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-MA) and Caroline Kennedy have endorsed Barack Obama for President. I’m excited from the stand point that I’ve also endorsed Obama (though to significantly less fanfare), and the more support, the better. Now, if we can get about 54 million other Americans to endorse Obama, we might just stand a chance.
What impresses me so much about Indecision 2008 is how wide open it is. The Democratic and Republican nomenklatura are all over the place. This time around, it’s an actual, honest-to-God horse race in a way I cannot recall ever seeing before.
The fact that Obama has received the endorsement of two scions of the Kennedy clan is perhaps not the important news it might once have been. Still, you have to know that Sen. Hillary Clinton would have dearly loved to get those endorsements. Two more members of the Democratic establishment have defected to Obama, which definitely puts a dent in Clinton’s once-perceived aura of “inevitability”. Time was when the primaries were viewed as Clinton’s equivalent of Sherman’s march through the South. My, how things have changed, eh? As Jim Newell put it: “Kinda sucks to be Hillary Clinton right now”. Yes, I would imagine that it does. And it looks as if we’re going to have to hold off on another Clinton coronation, at least for the time being.
If nothing else, the tight race between Obama and Clinton (even with John Edwards thrown in for good measure) will generate more interest, it may even get more of the American sheeple to pay attention. In a democracy, a system which can only thrive when people participate, this can only be a good thing. At least until Republican 527 groups begin rolling out the advertising accusing Clinton of being a closet lesbian or Obama of being a closet Islamist who attended a madrassa.
