Exactly one year from today, George W. Bush’s second term will end and he will return to Texas, where he is expected to divide time between his Crawford ranch and his presidential library and “freedom foundation,” most likely to be built in Dallas. But before he heads home to Texas, he’s going to try to burnish his legacy in Washington. In his final year in office, President Bush hopes to take a page from both Truman and Eisenhower. A Truman admirer, Bush hopes that history will prove him right for taking unpopular foreign policy stands based on deeply held principles. And like Ike, Bush’s final year as president will feature multiple international excursions designed to reinforce his vision for a peaceful, democratic world.
Yes, exactly 365 days from today, Our Glorious and Benevolent Leader © will ride off into the sunset…and a grateful nation will hope the door doesn’t hit him in the @$$ on his way out of town. Oh, man…if the War Criminal in Chief © is taking his inspiration from Harry Truman, the good people of Japan should be VERY nervous this year. Y’all might want to keep a suitcase packed…just in case.
Finally, an era in which lies, deception, propaganda, and rampant ignorance ruled will (hopefully) draw to a close. Personally, I’d hope that this sorry excuse for a President’s (and a human being) immediate post-Presidency future would include facing a firing squad for war crimes, but I realize that’s about as likely as my skating a shift for the New York Rangers. (Hey, a man can dream….)
The good new is that, taking a page out of Dwight Eisenhower’s book, Commander Codpiece © will be out of the country for a good part of 2008, where he’s likely to do less harm than he might if he were stateside. The flip side of this, of course, is that Vice President Dick Cheney, who’s spent the better part of the past seven years channeling Vlad the Impaler, will be in charge when his boss is gallivanting around the world. God (if there is one) help us all….
Though I eagerly await 1.20.09 and the change that will undoubtedly come (if a Democrat is elected President), the next Chief Executive will likely spend a good part of their (first) term undoing the damage done during the “cowboy diplomacy” years of the Bush Administration.
CLEANUP!! AISLE 5!!
Hang on, ya’ll…help is on the way, though it can’t come soon enough, can it?
