Childish, disrespectful, immature...and built to stay that way

House in chaos: GOP calls vote during Lantos memorial

During what was supposed to be a somber memorial service in Statuary Hall for Rep. Tom Lantos, who died Monday, the House chamber became mired in chaos over procedural votes. Democrats angrily denounced the GOP as insensitive for calling a “motion to adjourn” ‚Äö√Ñ√Æ essentially a dilatory tactic ‚Äö√Ñ√Æ while dignitaries were still giving tributes to Lantos, a Holocaust survivor who was chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee. But Republican aides shot back quickly, saying it was Democrats who broke an agreement to keep the House in recess during the memorial service.

This is classy, eh? One of the House’s elder statesmen dies after a prolonged illness, and Republicans can’t even wait to play political games until after the memorial service is over. If there has been a more shameless and disgusting display of partisan oneupsmanship…well, I can’t think of it. Is it any wonder why Americans have such a low opinion of Congress these days? Frankly, I’ve seen kindergarten classes that displayed greater degrees of class and maturity.

It’s not at all unreasonable to expect Congressmen to conduct themselves as mature, reasonable adults. After all, they had gathered to remember Tom Lantos, an elder statesmen from an era when comity and cooperation still meant something. Now, I doubt most Congressman could even define those two terms.

Where is the adult supervision when you need it?
