Denial is more than a river in Sugar Land

Man is not causing climate change. Climate change may be a phenomenon, but there is no science to suggest that man is the cause of climate change…. It is arrogance to suggest that man can affect climate change. There’s no science that supports such a notion.

It seems there’s no empirical truth that can stand up to the rhetorical stylings of “The Hammer”, whose tune hasn’t change since he was hounded from his throne in Congress for being a corrupt d——-bag. If it can make wealthy, White Republicans money, it’s good and deserves to be championed to his last dying breath. If it’s “science”, that bane of commerce and the capitalist system, it’s bad, and DeLay will spin it until his listeners have been thoroughly propagandized into getting into line and supporting his position. To DeLay’s way of thinking, the only greenhouse gasses are what’s produced when Al Gore opens his mouth.

Here’s a thought: wanting something to be a certain way doesn’t ipso facto make it so. Tom DeLay may not believe in global warming, he may even be willing to deny the reality of it until his townhouse in Virginia is underwater. He may think Al Gore is a raving lunatic. None of these things change the realities we face. Yes, I understand that there’s disagreement among learned people over the degree of the impact that global climate changed has had and will continue to have. No lucid, open-minded, reasonably informed person denies that global climate change isn’t a reality, and that we have it within our power to do something about it. No, we may not necessarily be able to reduce the damage that’s already been done, but we can certainly take positive steps to ensure the condition of the planet our children and grandchildren will inherit. And what’s so wrong with doing something to help secure the future?

Sure, empirical science is all well and good, but America became the great nation it is because of capitalism. We didn’t become the richest, most powerful nation in the world by worrying about icebergs and wood ducks, did we?

DeLay may not believe that man has the power to effect global climate change, but a look at the empirical data confirms that we most certainly do. No matter how much DeLay has convinced himself otherwise, there is scientific data that confirms what he so steadfastly denies. Perhaps when Miami’s underwater, he’ll figure things out.
