Failure is not the obstacle to immortality that you might think it would be

In news that should stun no one, the board of trustees at Southern Methodist University has voted to allow the George W. Bush (&^%up Library (or, as I like to call it, this nation’s largest monument to abject failure) to be built at SMU. Being that this is Texas we’re talking about, and Dallas in particular, there are still significant numbers of people who simply haven’t been paying attention for the past eight years. Most of these folks still think that Our Glorious and Benevolent Leader © is a decisive, resolute man of God. Unfortunately, these people are still allowed to vote. Having a functional grip on reality and a modicum of native intelligence isn’t a voting criteria. Perhaps it should be.

What staggers me is that upwards of $200 MILLION will be spent on this monument to mediocrity and cowboy diplomacy. The again, Dallas loves their Cowboys, no?? It floors me that there are people of substantial wealth and surpassing ignorance out there who are more than willing to donate large sums of money to this project. I guess it really IS true; a fool and his money really are soon parted. They could be spending their money on yachts, Lamborghinis, or prime Bolivian marching powder, but if they’re stupid enough to waste their money in this fashion, more power to ‘em. At least a bunch of people will make money constructing the damn thing.

What’s truly sad about this cluster(&^% is the amount of money being devoted to building a memorial to mediocrity and abject failure. Really, what exactly about the last eight years is worth celebrating? Could it be….

  • Runaway record deficit spending?

  • An immoral, pointless war in Iraq?

  • 4,000 dead Americans from the war in Iraq?

  • A devastated American city (New Orleans) still recovering from Hurricane Katrina 2 1/2 years later?

  • Record-high gasoline prices?

  • Record-high oil company profits?

  • A looming recession?

  • A President beholden to Dominionist Theocrats determined to destroy the Constitution and replace it with Sharia the law of the Old Testament?

I could go on, but you get the point, right? Yep, there’s nothing quite like celebrating mediocrity, lies, propaganda, and intolerant Christianity, eh??

If there’s any justice in this world, the library will be built over a large sinkhole….
