John McCain is ardently anti-choice — he wants to make abortion illegal and overturn Roe v. Wade. These positions put him out of step with mainstream voters and will hurt him in the general election. However, as NPR reported on February 2, 2008, many Republican voters incorrectly believe that Sen. McCain supports abortion rights.
Those of you who frequent TPRS are undoubtedly aware of my generalized disdain for the intellectual agility and curiosity of the American sheeple. It’s not that there aren’t Americans capable of rational, critical thought…it’s just that the majority seem utterly incapable engaging in either. As illustration, I offer John McCain…or at least most Americans view of his stance on abortion rights. Most Americans believe that McCain supports abortion right- an opinion McCain and his campaign has done nothing to disabuse the majority of. How this fallacy came to be the prevailing view is beyond me. Call it a triumph of propaganda. Call it the Big Lie. Whatever you call it, I’d suspect that somewhere Josef Goebbels is laughing maniacally. Truth? Ultimately, it’s whatever Fox News Channel can convince the American sheeple of.
It would be nice to think that the American sheeple have the intellectual agility to sort propaganda from fact, but you’d be way wrong. Why do you think negative advertising is so effective? Well, perhaps it’s because most Americans prefer reaction to critical thought. It’s a lot less work, and they wouldn’t say it if it weren’t true…would they?
If Hillary Clinton is the Democratic nominee, we may well see a parade of ads portraying her as a closet lesbian supported by a groundswell of unrepentant homosexuals and militant feminazis determined to neuter American men and convert our children into flaming homosexuals. And she’ll take away our guns
If Barack Obama is the nominee, you can expect a plethora of TV spots focusing on the fact that his middle name is Hussein. You’ll hear ads playing up the “Obama went to a madrassa” canard while alleging that Obama has secretly pledged to turn our great nation over to his Islamofascist overlords. And he’ll take away our guns.
Why not? If you’ll believe that John McCain supports abortion rights, there’s probably no limit to the propaganda you’ll swallow. Damn, we’re certainly an undemanding and intellectually pliable lot, aren’t we?? This is why eight years of Our Glorious and Benevolent Leader © is exactly what we’ve deserved.
