Welcome to the triumph of the Big Lie

Don’t be telling me that this was just an honest mistake, a slip-up by an intern in the MSGOP MSNBC graphics department who got high in the control booth and accidentally swapped a photo of Osama bin-Laden for one of Barack Obama. This isn’t the first time this sort of thing has happened, nor will it be the last. We’ll hear about the “madrassa” that Obama attended as a child, we’ll be treated to serious discussions about the significance of his middle name (Hussein), and there will be people who will discuss with appropriate gravitas the “fact” that Obama is secretly in thrall to Islamofascist terrorists. Yes, Obama will undoubtedly sell us out to terrorists, and by the end of his first term all American women will be forced to wear the hijab and refrain from being seen in the company of men other than their husbands. Women will become property, and we’ll have Barack Obama to thank for that. In the face of this dire threat, only John McCain Republicans can save America now.

There are those on the far right who know full well that they can’t win the White House with John McCain as their standard bearer. For one thing, they can’t stand McCain, and they consider him a heretic, the heir to Ronald Reagan’s legacy in the same way Dennis Kucinich is. They’ll also do ANYTHING to win (look at what they did to John Kerry in 2004), no matter how underhanded, dishonest, unethical, or immoral. All the nutjobs on the Far Right care about is winning and maintaining political power, and they’ll do ANYTHING to achieve that goal. If it takes smearing a good and decent man…well, that’s just politics, eh?

Stay tuned, y’all…if you think this is a campaign that will be run and debated on the issues facing this country, it might be time to get back on your medication. If you think that 2004 was ugly, you haven’t seen anything. Just wait.
