In Clintonland, politics really is a blood sport

THE WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD

(apologies to Keith Olbermann)

James Carville

Spirited Clinton adviser tells the New York Times that New Mexican governor’s backing Obama during Holy Week was “appropriate” and “ironic” because it was like Judas selling out Jesus…. “Mr. Richardson’s endorsement came right around the anniversary of the day when Judas sold out for 30 pieces of silver, so I think the timing is appropriate, if ironic,” Mr. Carville said, referring to Holy Week.

I’ve admired James Carville for years. His political acumen and his hard-boiled Louisiana worldview is truly unique and endearing. Unfortunately, his attack dog style and his win-at-all cost support of Sen. Hillary Clinton (his work for the Clintons is still the biggest reason Carville even manages to get face time on network and cable television these days) is anything but endearing. His attack on New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson is frankly sickening and completely classless. Sadly, this attitude is becoming increasingly characteristic of the both Sen. Clinton and her surrogates. It’s as if they recognize they can’t win using conventional means, so they’re breaking the guerilla warfare tactics. Unfortunately, “slash and burn” is a damn poor way to run a campaign, much less build and support a party.

What made Carville’s attack so sickening was that, when given the opportunity to back away and appear conciliatory, he declined and in fact reiterated that he stood behind his statement. Yikes…what a (&^%$#@ troll.

I find myself wondering with more frequency these days what it is about Team Clinton that inspires such mean-spirited, divisive, and hateful rhetoric. I can understand (but I won’t condone) using a “slash and burn” campaign style in the general election, but during the Democratic primary season? Even if Sen. Clinton were to somehow scam her way into the nomination, her campaign will leave the party so fractured and angry that it’s difficult imagining her being able to defeat John McCain in November.

I understand that these are adults that we’re talking about here, and that Sen. Clinton often has no more control over her surrogates than your or I do. Even so, the person at the top sets the tone for the entire organization, and it’s clear the the Clinton campaign’s “win at any and all cost” attitude comes straight from the top. This is NOT what Democrats stand for…is it??

WE DESERVE BETTER.
