Lies, and the lying liar who lyingly lies

Ha ha, it turns out that Hillary Clinton even lies with her lying about her harrowing overseas adventures. First she says she once ran screaming through the streets of Tuzla smeared with the blood of Bosnian snipers as she singlehandedly brought peace to Northern Ireland; then she says she was the first president’s wife to visit a war zone since Eleanor Roosevelt. Wrong again, Pantsuit! That honor goes to Pat Nixon, who visited Vietnam with Sinbad way back in 1969.

I believe it was me who said (and not so very long ago, BTW) that combat zone memories are not generally the sort of thing that goes fuzzy on you. Trust, if you’re in a situation where the possibility of taking fire is a reality, you’re going to remain that brush with your own mortality. I’ve been there, and even though I thankfully never came under direct fire, the mere possibility was more than enough to get my adrenaline pumping and focus my attention in a way that it’s never been focused- before or since. Even narrowly avoiding a mountain climbing accident didn’t have that effect on me, because at the time it happened, I was unaware of how dangerous and precarious a situation I was in.

I watched an interview that Tracy Barry from KGW-TV here in Portland did with Sen. Clinton about her “misstatements” regarding her 1996 trip to Bosnia…and I’m here to tell you that it made me want to puke. Not only did Sen. Clinton soft-pedal her prevarications, she passed it off as insignificant. So she got a few words wrong; big deal, right? It’s a “mistake” anyone could have made.

Well, no, not exactly, Senator. You started in unequivocally terms what landing in Tuzla was like. I know that you’re not stupid enough to have forgotten that a news crew from CBS news, including reporter Sheryl Atkisson, went along for the ride. This means that there’s videotape available- a fact that someone as intelligent and politically astute as yourself would have been well aware of. Nonetheless, you went ahead with inflating the importance and the events of your trip…and you got busted for lying about it. This was no simple “misstatement”, nor was it a insignificant “mistake”. Despite your disgusting and wholly inappropriate effort to laugh the matter away, there is nothing funny, or even mildly amusing, about it. You’re a liar. Why wasn’t the truth good enough, Senator? Don’t you think that we deserve better than cheap, poorly constructed lies and propaganda? Or are you so completely focused on winning that you will sacrifice truth, your dignity, and your reputation in order to secure the Democratic nomination?

If, as you say, this race will last three more months, you will cleave the Democratic party asunder. The eventual nominee will be so bruised and damaged from the fight, and the party faithful so disillusioned, that John McCain will likely have the political equivalent of a walkover in the general election. Is that what you want- if you can’t be President, then NO Democrat should be, either??

What sickens me more than anything, however- even more than your egregious lies and your refusal to accept responsibility for them- is your “best defense is a good offense” response. Your attack on Barack Obama’s pastor is a transparent and craven attempt to deflect attention away from your (&^%-up. And let’s not even get started on the fact that one of your own pastors isn’t exactly winning any friends these days (being sentenced to three years in prison for touch a seven-year-old girl in an inappropriate manner will do that to you….).

Sen. Clinton, you really ought to be ashamed of yourself. Then again, if there is one thing that’s become clear, it’s that shame isn’t part of your vocabulary- and even if it was, you’d find a way to shift responsibility to Sen. Obama. I’ve lost whatever respect I once had for you. I can’t believe that you set out to destroy the Democratic Party, but you may in the end be responsible for exactly that. Nice going, eh?
