Barack Obama was here in Portland yesterday morning for a rally in front of 12,000 True Believers at Memorial Coliseum. What really put Portland on the media map, though, was that New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson was in town to endorse Obama. Consider it another nail in the coffin of Hillary Clinton’s campaign. Richardson’s endorsement isn’t going to deliver the nomination to Obama, but it’s certainly not going to hurt his cause. While Politico’s Jim Vandehei and Mike Allen are putting forth the argument that Clinton’s campaign is increasingly based on make-believe, Clinton is sounding increasingly whiny, petulant, and desperate. Obama, meanwhile, seems to be weathering the storm of this past week reasonably well.
Perhaps it’s time for Hillary Clinton to own up to the reality of her situation and admit that it’s time to do the right thing. Rather than continuing to divide the Democratic party in her quixotic quest for any edge that might help her steal the nomination, perhaps it’s time for her to recognize that the only way she’s going to win IS to steal the nomination.
Say goodnight, Hillary. You put up a good fight, but you’re wearing out your welcome. Your whiny petulance is beneath you and it’s damaging the part you want to represent. You’re better than that, and the Democratic Party certainly deserves better. Or are you really so bent on doing whatever it takes to win that you’re willing to run the risk of handing the general election to John McCain? Not even you are that craven and self-absorbed…or are you?
